WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 The Lord reigns, clothed in majesty! He wears his royal robes, with his power worn like a belt. The world is held together firmly—it cannot be broken apart.
1 Yahweh reigns! He is clothed with majesty! Yahweh is armed with strength. The world also is established. It can’t be moved.
2 Your throne has existed from ages past; you are from eternity.
2 Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting.
3 The floods have raised up, Lord; the floods have raised their voices; the floods have raised up their crashing waves.
3 The floods have lifted up, Yahweh, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves.
4 But greater than the most violent ocean, greater than the largest waves of the sea, the greatest is the Lord above.
4 Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty.
5 Your laws are totally trustworthy. Your house, Lord, is holy forever.
5 Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, Yahweh, forever more.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XCII)

We are not Christians, except on account of a future life: let no one hope for present blessings, let no one promise himself the happiness of the world, because he is a Christian: but let him use the happiness he hath, as he may, in what manner he may, when he may, as far as he may.

The Psalmist also says, Thy throne is prepared of old; Thou art from everlasting.
