Notes on this text (1)

1 The Lord reigns; let the nations tremble! He sits on his throne above the cherubim; let the earth shake! 2 The Lord rules supreme in Zion, he is sovereign over all the nations. 3 Let them praise his greatness, and respect him for who he is—for he is holy, 4 having kingly power. You love justice; you make impartial decisions. You have made sure everything is done in fairness and according to what's right. 5 Give respect to the Lord our God! Bow down at his feet, for he is holy! 6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also prayed to him. They called out to the Lord for help, and he answered them. 7 He spoke to the people from the pillar of cloud, and they kept the laws and decrees he gave them. 8 Lord our God, you answered them. You were a forgiving God to them, but you punished them when they did wrong. 9 Honor the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain. For the Lord our God is holy!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

(ver. 1). The new man knoweth this, the old man knoweth it not. The old man is the old life, and the new man the new life: the old life is derived from Adam, the new life is formed in Christ. But in this Psalm, the whole world is enjoined to sing a new song.

And those who said, "The Lord hath reigned; let the people be enraged: [even] He who sitteth upon the cherubim; let the earth be moved," were thus predicting partly that wrath from all nations which after His ascension came upon those who believed in Him, with the movement of the whole earth against the Church; and partly the fact that, …
