1 A song for pilgrims going up to Jerusalem. Lord, remember David, and all that he went through. 2 He made a promise to the Lord, a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: 3 “I will not go home, I will not go to bed, 4 I will not go to sleep, I will not take a nap, 5 until I find a place where the Lord can live, a home for the Mighty One of Jacob.” 6 In Ephrathah we received information about the Ark of Agreement, and we found it in fields near Jaar. 7 Let's go to the place where the Lord lives and bow down at his feet in worship. 8 Come, Lord, and enter your home, together with your Ark of your power. 9 May your priests wear goodness like clothing; may your faithful people shout for joy. 10 For the sake of your servant David, don't reject the king you have chosen. 11 The Lord made a solemn promise to David, one he will never cancel—“I will put one of your descendants on your throne. 12 If your sons keep to my agreement and my laws that I will teach them, then their sons will always occupy your throne.” 13 For the Lord has chosen Zion, wanting to make his home there, saying: 14 “This will always be my home; this is where I want to live. 15 I will provide the people of the city with all they need; I will feed the poor. 16 I will clothe its priests with salvation; and its faithful people will shout for joy. 17 I will make the line of David even more powerful. I have prepared a lamp for my chosen king. 18 I will humiliate his enemies, but the crown he wears will shine brightly.”

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
In this Psalm, the humility of one that is a servant of God and faithful is commended unto us, by whose voice it is sung; which is the whole body of Christ.
