Notes on this text (1)

1 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord's reputation! Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord 2 who worship in the house of the Lord, in the courts of our God. 3 Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praises to his character because it is wonderful! 4 For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself; Israel as his very own. 5 I know how great the Lord is—our Lord is greater than all gods. 6 The Lord does whatever he wants throughout heaven and earth, on the seas and in the ocean depths. 7 He causes the clouds to rise all over the earth, he makes lightning flash and give rain, he sends the winds from his storehouses. 8 He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, both human and animal. 9 He did wonderful miracles among you in Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. 10 He struck down many nations, he killed powerful kings, such as 11 Sihon, king of the Amorites, Og, king of Bashan, and all the kings who ruled in Canaan. 12 He handed over their lands to Israel, his special people, for them to possess. 13 Your reputation, Lord, stands forever; you, Lord, are remembered for all generations. 14 The Lord will vindicate his people; he will show compassion to those who follow him. 15 The idols of the foreign nations are only objects of silver and gold, made by human hands. 16 They have mouths, but can't speak; they have eyes, but can't see. 17 They have ears, but can't hear; they can't even breathe! 18 Those who make idols will become just like them, and so will everyone who trusts in them. 19 People of Israel, praise the Lord! Descendants of Aaron, praise the Lord! 20 Levites, praise the Lord! Everyone who worships the Lord, praise the Lord! 21 Praise the Lord from Zion, for he lives in Jerusalem! Praise the Lord!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXIV)

(ver. 1), "who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God" (ver. 2). Why has he added, "in the courts"? Courts mean the wider spaces of a house. He who stands in the courts is not straitened, is not confined, in some fashion is enlarged.

  2. Quotes verse 135:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXI)

Lo, the whole world crieth out in the Church of God, "I know that the Lord is great." Yet doubtless there are but few who are saved.

  3. Quotes verse 135:7 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IX)

For so many measures of waters lie upon the clouds, yet they are not rent: but come down with all good order upon the earth. Who bringeth the winds out of their treasuries?

  4. Quotes verse 135:6 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book II, Chapters XXVI–XXIX)

For whatsoever the Lord pleased that did He in heaven and in earth, and no one resisted His will.

  5. Quotes verse 135:5 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXI)

… with how great assurance will the purified mass, standing at the Right Hand, fearing now for itself the admixture of no evil men, nor the loss of any of the good, now about to reign with Christ, say, "I know that the Lord is great"!
