Notes on this text (1)

1 Praise the Lord! Happy are those who respect the Lord, who love to do what he says! 2 Their descendants will prosper in the land; the children of those who do good will be blessed. 3 Their families will be wealthy; the good they do has eternal results. 4 Light shines in the darkness for those who live right, for those who are gracious, compassionate, and good. 5 Good things come to those who are generous in their lending and are honest in doing business. 6 They will never fall. Those who live right won't be forgotten. 7 They aren't afraid of bad news because they rely totally on the Lord. 8 They are confident and brave, and see their enemies defeated. 9 They share generously, giving to the poor; the good they do has eternal results. They are greatly respected. 10 The wicked observe all this and are mad; they gnash their teeth in anger. They waste away, and all that they hoped for comes to nothing.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXI)

The days have come for us to sing Allelujah....Now these days come only to pass away, and pass away to come, again, and typify the day which does not come and pass away, because it is neither preceded by yesterday to cause it to come, nor pressed upon by the morrow to cause it to pass....For as these days succeed …

… in which each one shall rise, what should hinder us from applying to the woman what is expressly said of the man, understanding both sexes to be included under the general term "man?"
