Notes on this text (1)

1 A song for pilgrims going up to Jerusalem. When the Lord brought his people back from captivity to Zion, it was as if we were dreaming! 2 We laughed so much, we sang for joy. The other nations said, “The Lord has done wonderful things for these people.” 3 The Lord certainly has done wonderful things for us. How happy we were! 4 Please return and help us again, Lord. Renew us like streams of water that renew the Negev desert. 5 Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy! 6 Those who weep as they go out to sow their seed will be singing in celebration when they carry the harvest home.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXV)

"They that put their trust in the Lord shall be even as the mount Sion: they shall not be removed for ever" (ver. 1). 3. Who are these? "They shall stand fast for ever, who dwell in Jerusalem" (ver. 2).

  2. Quotes verse 126:5 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter IV — 1-42)

Of that harvest it is said, "They that sow in tears shall reap with joy." But to that harvest not apostles, but angels, shall be sent forth.

  3. Quotes verse 126:5 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IV)

… by abstaining from wine and flesh, not because we abhor them as abominations, but because we look for our reward; that having scorned things sensible, we may enjoy a spiritual and intellectual feast; and that having now sown in tears we may reap in joy in the world to come.
