Audio: World English Bible (WEB), read by Winfred W. Henson · About the recordings

1 The angel showed me the river of water of life, crystal-clear, flowing out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, 2 right in the middle of the main street of the city. On both sides of the river was the tree of life, producing twelve crops of fruit, one every month. The leaves of the tree were used to heal people from all nations. 3 There will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be there in the city, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night, and they will not need the light of a lamp, or the light of the sun, because the Lord God will give them light. They shall reign for ever and ever. 6 The angel told me, “These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who gave his Spirit to the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants what is about to happen.” 7 “I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the prophetic words of this book.” 8 I am John who heard and saw all this. When I heard and saw them, I fell down at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things to worship him. 9 He told me, “Don't do that! I am one of God's servants just as you are, together with your brothers the prophets, and those who obey the words of this book. Worship God!” 10 Then he told me, “Don't seal up the words of prophecy of this book and keep them secret, for the time is near. 11 Whoever doesn't do what is right, let them stay that way. Whoever is impure, let them stay that way. Whoever does what is right, let them stay that way. Whoever is holy, let them stay that way.” 12 “I am coming soon, and I am bringing my reward to give to everybody based on what they've done. 13 I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. 14 Blessed are those who wash their robes so that they have the right to the tree of life, and can enter into the city through the gates. 15 Those outside the city are dogs, those who practice witchcraft, those who are sexually immoral, those who murder, those who worship idols, and all those who love and invent lies. 16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony to share with the churches. I am both the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” 17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Whoever hears this, say, “Come.” Whoever is thirsty, come, and whoever wants to, freely drink of the water of life. 18 I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book that if anyone adds to them then God will add to them the plagues described in this book. 19 If anyone takes away the prophetic words of this book, God will take away their share of the tree of life and of the holy city that are described in this book. 20 He who confirms all this says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen, come, Lord Jesus. 21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with the believers. Amen.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

And thus He forewarns us: "Behold, the Lord [cometh], and His reward is before His face, to render to every man according to his work." He exhorts us, therefore, with our whole heart to attend to this, that we be not lazy or slothful in any good work.

  2. Quotes verse 22:17 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Preface)

… easy to obtain from the Church; since the apostles, like a rich man [depositing his money] in a bank, lodged in her hands most copiously all things pertaining to the truth: so that every man, whosoever will, can draw from her the water of life. For she is the entrance to life; all others are thieves and robbers.

  3. Quotes verse 22:8 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter III — 22-29)

But said the angel, "Rise; see thou do it not: worship God, for I am thy fellow-servant, and the brethren's." An angel, then, forbade a man to fall down at his feet.

  4. Quotes verse 22:11 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm VII)

He says, "be consummated," be completed, according to that in the Apocalypse, "Let the righteous become more righteous, and let the filthy be filthy still." For the wickedness of those men appears consummate, who crucified the Son of God; but greater is theirs who will not live uprightly, and hate the precepts of truth, for whom the Son of God …
