1 “Don't be anxious. Trust in God, trust in me as well. 2 In my Father's house there are many rooms. If this wasn't so I would have told you. I'm going to prepare a place for you. 3 Once I've gone and prepared a place for you, I will come again and take you back with me, so that you can be there with me too. 4 You know the way to where I'm going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus replied, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and you have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we'll be convinced.” 9 Jesus replied, “Have I been with you such a long time, Philip, and yet you still don't know me? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don't you believe that I live in the Father and the Father lives in me? The words I speak are not mine; it's the Father living in me who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I tell you that I live in the Father, and the Father lives in me, or at least believe because of the evidence provided by all that I've done. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who trusts in me will do the same things I am doing. In fact they will do even greater things because I am going to the Father. 13 I'll do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified through the Son. 14 Whatever you ask for in my name, I will do it. 15 If you love me, you will keep my commands. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, 17 the Spirit of truth, who will always be with you. The world cannot accept him because it isn't looking for him and doesn't know him. But you know him because he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not abandon you like orphans: I will come back to you. 19 Soon the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too. 20 On that day you will know that I live in the Father, you live in me, and I live in you. 21 Those who keep my commands are the ones who love me, those who love me will be loved by my Father. I will love them too, and will reveal myself to them.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) responded, “Lord, why would you reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus replied, “Those who love me will do as I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with them. 24 Those who don't love me don't do what I say. These words don't come from me, they come from the Father who sent me. 25 I'm explaining this to you while I'm still here with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, in my place, he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I'm giving you. The peace I give you is nothing like what the world gives. Don't be anxious, and don't be afraid. 28 You've heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, but I will come back to you.’ If you really loved me, you would be happy because I'm going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I've explained this to you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will be convinced. 30 I can't talk to you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no power to control me, 31 but I'm doing what my Father told me to do so that the world will know that I love the Father. Now get up. Let's go.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 14:6 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XCI)

Amongst other things, when the Holy Gospel was being read, ye heard what the Lord Jesus said, "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life." Truth and life doth every man desire; but not every man doth find the way.

  2. Commentary 14:4 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XIV — 4-6)

We have now the opportunity, dearly, beloved, as far as we can, of understanding the earlier words of the Lord from the later, and His previous statements by those that follow, in what you have heard was His answer to the question of the Apostle Thomas.

  3. Commentary 14:8 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXXIV)

The Prophet said to the Jews, "Thou hadst the countenance of a harlot, thou wert shameless towards all men." ( Jer. iii. 3, LXX.) Now it seems fitting to use this expression not only against that city, but against all who shamelessly set their faces against the truth.

  4. Quotes verse 14:6 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapter XV)

… He might come under the apprehension of man's senses, and having in Himself these six and twenty-four letters), then, becoming acquainted with Him, they ceased from their ignorance, and passed from death unto life, this name serving as their guide to the Father of truth. For the Father of all had resolved to put an end to ignorance, and to …

… strength sufficient to enjoy Thee; but I found it not until I embraced that "Mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus," "who is over all, God blessed for ever," calling unto me, and saying, "I am the way, the truth, and the life," and mingling that food which I was unable to receive with our flesh.
