WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Praise YAH! For [it is] good to praise our God, || For pleasant—lovely [is] praise.
1 Praise Yah, for it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant and fitting to praise him.
2 YHWH [is] building Jerusalem, || He gathers the driven away of Israel.
2 Yahweh builds up Jerusalem. He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.
3 Who is giving healing to the broken of heart, || And is binding up their griefs.
3 He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
4 Appointing the number of the stars, || He gives names to all of them.
4 He counts the number of the stars. He calls them all by their names.
5 Our Lord [is] great, and abundant in power, || There is no narration of His understanding.
5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power. His understanding is infinite.
6 YHWH is causing the meek to stand, || Making the wicked low to the earth.
6 Yahweh upholds the humble. He brings the wicked down to the ground.
7 Answer to YHWH with thanksgiving, || Sing to our God with a harp.
7 Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving. Sing praises on the harp to our God,
8 Who is covering the heavens with clouds, || Who is preparing rain for the earth, || Who is causing grass to spring up [on] mountains,
8 who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass grow on the mountains.
9 Giving to the beast its food, || To the young of the ravens that call.
9 He provides food for the livestock, and for the young ravens when they call.
10 He does not delight in the might of the horse, || He is not pleased in the legs of a man.
10 He doesn’t delight in the strength of the horse. He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.
11 YHWH is pleased with those fearing Him, || With those waiting for His kindness.
11 Yahweh takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his loving kindness.
12 Glorify, O Jerusalem, YHWH, || Praise your God, O Zion.
12 Praise Yahweh, Jerusalem! Praise your God, Zion!
13 For He strengthened the bars of your gates, || He has blessed your sons in your midst.
13 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates. He has blessed your children within you.
14 Who is making your border peace, || He satisfies you [with] the fat of wheat.
14 He makes peace in your borders. He fills you with the finest of the wheat.
15 Who is sending forth His saying [on] earth, || His word runs very speedily.
15 He sends out his commandment to the earth. His word runs very swiftly.
16 Who is giving snow like wool, || He scatters hoarfrost as ashes.
16 He gives snow like wool, and scatters frost like ashes.
17 Casting forth His ice like morsels, || Who stands before His cold?
17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can stand before his cold?
18 He sends forth His word and melts them, || He causes His wind to blow—the waters flow.
18 He sends out his word, and melts them. He causes his wind to blow, and the waters flow.
19 Declaring His words to Jacob, || His statutes and His judgments to Israel.
19 He shows his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel.
20 He has not done so to any nation, || As for judgments, they have not known them. Praise YAH!
20 He has not done this for just any nation. They don’t know his ordinances. Praise Yah!

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXLVI)

Behold the Psalm soundeth; it is the voice of some one (and that some one are ye, if ye will), of some one encouraging his soul to praise God, and saying to himself, "Praise the Lord, O my soul" (ver. 1).

… bringeth out their host by number." And the Saviour says in the Gospel, "The very hairs of your head are all numbered." Far be it, then, from us to doubt that all number is known to Him "whose understanding," according to the Psalmist, "is infinite." The infinity of number, though there be no numbering of infinite numbers, is yet not …

… lesson David also lays the foundation from old time, saying enigmatically on this wise, "Thou openest Thine hand, and fillest every living thing with bounty;" and again, "To Him that giveth to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that call upon Him." "Who then," it may be said, "have not taken thought"?

Know you the bond of Pleiades, or the fence of Orion as He who counteth the number of the stars and calleth them all by their names?
