PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
5 Jesús amaba a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.
7 Después dijo a sus discípulos: ―Regresemos a Judea.
8 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί· ῥαββί, νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ;
11 Después dijo: ―Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme, pero voy a despertarlo.
Vamos a verlo.
18 Betania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, a sólo tres kilómetros.
21 Marta le dijo a Jesús: ―Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.
23 Jesús le dijo: ―Tu hermano volverá a vivir.
25 Jesús le dijo: ―Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá;
26 ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ, κἂν ἀποθάνῃ, ζήσεται· καὶ πᾶς ὁ ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. πιστεύεις τοῦτο;
34 Él les preguntó: ―¿Dónde lo sepultaron? Ellos le respondieron: ―Ven a verlo, Señor.
35 Jesús lloró.
36 Los judíos dijeron: ―¡Miren cuánto lo quería!
37 τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπον· οὐκ ἠδύνατο οὗτος, ὁ ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ, ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὗτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ;
40 λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς, ὄψει τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ;
Y dijeron: ―¿Qué vamos a hacer? Este hombre está haciendo muchas señales milagrosas.
47 συνήγαγον οὖν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον καὶ ἔλεγον· τί ποιοῦμεν, ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ σημεῖα ποιεῖ;
56 ἐζήτουν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔλεγον μετ᾽ ἀλλήλων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστηκότες· τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν, ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  4. Quotes verse 11:15 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XIV, Chapter 9)

  5. Quotes verse 11:42 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XVI)

    … Lazarus, added also a prayer; and then, lest this should make Him appear less than Him that begat Him, He, to correct this suspicion, added, "I said these things, because of the people which standeth by, that they may believe that thou hast sent me." And neither doth He work all things as one who acted by His own power, …
