1 I uđe opet u zbornicu, i onde beše čovek sa suvom rukom.
1 He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there whose hand was withered.
2 They watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him.
3 He said to the man whose hand was withered, “Stand up.”
4 I reče im: Valja li u subotu dobro činiti ili zlo činiti?
4 He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do harm? To save a life or to kill?” But they were silent.
5 When he had looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.
6 The Pharisees went out, and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
7 A Isus ode s učenicima svojim k moru; i mnogi narod iz Galileje pođe za Njim i iz Judeje;
7 Jesus withdrew to the sea with his disciples; and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, from Judea,
8 i iz Jerusalima i iz Idumeje i ispreko Jordana i od Tira i Sidona mnoštvo veliko čuvši šta On čini dođe k Njemu.
8 from Jerusalem, from Idumaea, beyond the Jordan, and those from around Tyre and Sidon. A great multitude, hearing what great things he did, came to him.
9 He spoke to his disciples that a little boat should stay near him because of the crowd, so that they wouldn’t press on him.
10 For he had healed many, so that as many as had diseases pressed on him that they might touch him.
11 I duhovi nečisti kad Ga viđahu, pripadahu k Njemu i vikahu govoreći: Ti si Sin Božji.
11 The unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, fell down before him and cried, “You are the Son of God!”
12 He sternly warned them that they should not make him known.
13 I iziđoše na goru, i dozva koje On hteše; i dođoše Mu.
13 Y subió al monte, y llamó á sí á los que él quiso; y vinieron á él.
13 He went up into the mountain and called to himself those whom he wanted, and they went to him.
14 I postavi dvanaestoricu da budu s Njim, i da ih pošalje da propovedaju,
14 He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach
15 and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:
16 Prvog Simona, i nadede mu ime Petar;
16 A Simón, al cual puso por nombre Pedro;
16 Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter);
17 i Jakova Zevedejevog i Jovana brata Jakovljevog, i nadede im imena Voanerges, koje znači Sinovi groma;
17 Y á Jacobo, [hijo] de Zebedeo, y á Juan hermano de Jacobo; y les apellidó Boanerges, que es, Hijos del trueno;
17 James the son of Zebedee; and John, the brother of James, (whom he called Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder);
18 i Andriju i Filipa i Vartolomija i Mateja i Tomu i Jakova Alfejevog i Tadiju i Simona Kananita,
18 Y á Andrés, y á Felipe, y á Bartolomé, y á Mateo, y á Tomás, y á Jacobo [hijo] de Alfeo, y á Tadeo, y á Simón el Cananita,
18 Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot;
19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Then he came into a house.
20 The multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
21 When his friends heard it, they went out to seize him; for they said, “He is insane.”
On pomoću kneza đavolskog izgoni đavole.
22 The scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul,” and, “By the prince of the demons he casts out the demons.”
23 I dozvavši ih govoraše im u pričama: Kako može sotona sotonu izgoniti?
23 He summoned them and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
24 I ako se carstvo samo po sebi razdeli, ne može ostati carstvo ono;
24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25 i ako se dom sam po sebi razdeli, ne može ostati dom onaj;
25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26 If Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he can’t stand, but has an end.
27 But no one can enter into the house of the strong man to plunder unless he first binds the strong man; then he will plunder his house.
28 De cierto os digo [que] todos los pecados serán perdonados á los hijos de los hombres, y las blasfemias cualesquiera con que blasfemaren;
28 “Most certainly I tell you, all sins of the descendants of man will be forgiven, including their blasphemies with which they may blaspheme;
29 but whoever may blaspheme against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation.”
30 Jer govorahu: U njemu je nečisti duh.
30 Porque decían: Tiene espíritu inmundo.
30 —because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
31 I dođe mati Njegova i braća Njegova, i stojeći napolju poslaše k Njemu da Ga zovu.
31 His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent to him, calling him.
32 I seđaše narod oko Njega. I rekoše Mu: Eto mati Tvoja i braća Tvoja i sestre Tvoje napolju pitaju za Te.
32 A multitude was sitting around him, and they told him, “Behold, your mother, your brothers, and your sisters are outside looking for you.”
33 He answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?”
34 Looking around at those who sat around him, he said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers!
35 Jer ko izvrši volju Božju, onaj je brat moj i sestra moja i mati moja.
35 For whoever does the will of God is my brother, my sister, and mother.”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 3:27 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Chapter XIX)

    For when Satan is bound, man is set free; since "none can enter a strong man's house and spoil his goods, unless he first bind the strong man himself." The Lord therefore exposes him as speaking contrary to the word of that God who made all things, and subdues him by means of the commandment.

  2. Quotes verse 3:27 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 6–7)

    The Lord Jesus Christ Himself says, "No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man" --meaning by the strong man the devil, because he had power to take captive the human race; and meaning by his goods which he was to take, those who had been held by the …

  3. Quotes verse 3:24 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily I)

    Whereas, if they were in discord, neither could this have been pointed out, and the doctrine itself had long since been brought to nought: "for every kingdom," saith He, "divided against itself shall not stand." But now even in this shines forth the might of the Spirit, namely, in that it prevailed on these men, engaged as they were in …

  5. Quotes verse 3:28 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XXI)

    But forasmuch as it is first said, "All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men;" which in another Evangelist is also thus expressed, "All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewithsoever they shall blaspheme;" without doubt, that blasphemy also which is spoken against the Father is included in that general expression; and …
