3 I uvede me duh u pusto mesto; i videh ženu gde sedi na zveri crvenoj koja beše puna imena hulnih i imaše sedam glava i deset rogova.
4 I žena beše obučena u porfiru i skerlet i nakićena zlatom i kamenjem dragim i biserom, i imaše čašu u ruci svojoj punu mrzosti i poganštine kurvarstva svog;
4 Y la mujer estaba vestida de púrpura y de escarlata, y dorada con oro, y [adornada] de piedras preciosas y de perlas, teniendo un cáliz de oro en su mano lleno de abominaciones, y de la suciedad de su fornicación;
5 i na čelu njenom napisano ime: Tajna, Vavilon veliki, mati kurvama i mrzostima zemaljskim.
5 Y en su frente un nombre escrito: MISTERIO, BABILONIA LA GRANDE, LA MADRE DE LAS FORNICACIONES Y DE LAS ABOMINACIONES DE LA TIERRA.
6 I videh ženu pijanu od krvi svetih i od krvi svedoka Isusovih. I začudih se čudom velikim kad je videh.
10 I jesu sedam careva.
13 Ovi jednu volju imaju, i silu i oblast svoju daće zveri.
15 I reče mi: Vode, što si video, gde sedi kurva, ono su ljudi i narodi, i plemena i jezici.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 17:15 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter IV — 1-18)

For that peoples are signified under the name of waters the Apocalypse of John clearly indicates to us, where, after he had been shown many waters, and he had asked what they were, was answered that they were peoples. That water, then--namely, that people--was shut in by the five books of Moses, as by five porches.
