4 to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you,
5 which are kept by the power of God thorow fayth vnto salvacion which salvacion is prepared all redy to be shewed in the last tyme
5 who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 in the which tyme ye shall reioyce though now for a season (if nede requyre) ye are in hevines thorowe manifolde temptacions,
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved in various trials,
7 that youre fayth once tried beinge moche more precious then golde that perissheth (though it be tried with fyre) myght be founde vnto lawde glory and honoure at the apperinge of Iesus Christ:
7 Para que la prueba de vuestra fe, mucho más preciosa que el oro, el cual perece, bien que sea probado con fuego, sea hallada en alabanza, gloria y honra, cuando Jesucristo fuere manifestado:
7 that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—
8 whom ye have not sene and yet love him in whom even now though ye se him not ye yet beleue and reioyce with ioye vnspeakable and glorious:
8 Al cual, no habiendo visto, le amáis; en el cual creyendo, aunque al presente no lo veáis, os alegráis con gozo inefable y glorificado;
8 whom, not having known, you love. In him, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy that is unspeakable and full of glory,
9 receavynge the ende of youre fayth the salvacion of youre soules.
9 receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
10 Of which salvacion have the Prophetes enquyred and searched which prophisied of the grace that shuld come vnto you
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently. They prophesied of the grace that would come to you,
11 searchinge when or at what tyme the sprete of Christ which was in them shuld signifie which sprete testified before the passions that shuld come vnto Christ and the glory that shuld folowe after:
11 Escudriñando cuándo y en qué punto de tiempo significaba el Espíritu de Cristo que estaba en ellos, el cual prenunciaba las aflicciones que habían de venir á Cristo, y las glorias después de ellas.
11 searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them pointed to when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow them.
12 vnto which Prophetes it was declared that not vnto them selves but vnto vs they shuld minister the thinges which are now shewed vnto you of them which by the holy goost sent doune from heven have preached vnto you the thinges which the angels desyre to beholde.
12 To them it was revealed that they served not themselves, but you, in these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.
13 Wherfore gyrde vp the loynes of youre myndes be sober and trust perfectly on the grace that is brought vnto you by the declaringe of Iesus Christ
13 Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—
14 as obedient chyldren not facioninge youre selves vnto youre olde lustes of ignorancye:
14 Como hijos obedientes, no conformándoos con los deseos que antes teníais estando en vuestra ignorancia;
14 as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance,
15 but as he which called you is holy even so be ye holy in all maner of conuersacion
15 but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior,
16 because it is written. Be ye holy for I am holy.
16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
17 And yf so be that ye call on the father which with out respecte of person iudgeth accordinge to every manes worke se that ye passe the tyme of youre pilgremage in feare.
17 If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man’s work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear,
18 For as moche as ye know how that ye were not redemed with corruptible sylver and golde from youre vayne conversacion which ye receaved by the tradicions of the fathers:
18 Sabiendo que habéis sido rescatados de vuestra vana conversación, la cual recibisteis de vuestros padres, no con cosas corruptibles, [como] oro ó plata;
18 knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things like silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,
19 but with the precious bloud of Christ as of a lambe vndefiled and withouten spot
19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ,
20 which was ordeyened before the worlde was made: but was declared in the last tymes for youre sakes
20 who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake,
21 which by his meanes have beleved on god that raysed him from deth and glorified him that youre fayth and hope myght be in god.
21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.
22 And for as moche as ye have purified youre soules thorowe the sprete in obeyinge the trueth for to love brotherly withouten saynynge se that ye love one another with a pure hert fervently:
22 Habiendo purificado vuestra almas en la obediencia de la verdad, por el Espíritu, en caridad hermanable sin fingimiento, amaos unos á otros entrañablemente de corazón puro:
22 Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently,
23 for ye are borne a newe not of mortall seed but of immortall by the worde of god which liveth and lasteth for ever.
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.
24 For all flesshe is as grasse and all the glory of man is as the floure of grasse. The grasse widdereth and the flower falleth awaye
24 Porque Toda carne es como la hierba, y toda la gloria del hombre como la flor de la hierba: secóse la hierba, y la flor se cayó;
24 For, “All flesh is like grass, and all of man’s glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;
25 but the worde of the lorde endureth ever. And this is the worde which by the gospell was preached amonge you.
25 but the Lord’s word endures forever.” This is the word of Good News which was preached to you.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:8 Polycarp of Smyrna, Epistle to the Philippians (The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians)

    … Lord Jesus Christ, who for our sins suffered even unto death, [but] "whom God raised from the dead, having loosed the bands of the grave." "In whom, though now ye see Him not, ye believe, and believing, rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory;" into which joy many desire to enter, knowing that "by grace ye are saved, not …

  2. Quotes verse 1:12 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XV)

    Admirable sophists, and explorers of the sublimities of the unknown Father, and rehearsers of those super-celestial mysteries "which the angels desire to look into!" --that they may learn that from the Nous of that Father who is above all, the Word was produced blind, that is, ignorant of the Father who produced him!

    … God destroy." "Let no man deceive himself." But perhaps a man will say, "My soul is the temple of God, not my body," and will add this testimony also, "All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass." Unhappy interpretation!

  4. Quotes verse 1:17 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture VII)

    For if we call on Him as Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, let us pass the time of our sojourning here in fear, loving not the world, neither the things that are in the world: for if any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

    "Wherefore, girding up your loins," "serve the Lord in fear" and truth, as those who have forsaken the vain, empty talk and error of the multitude, and "believed in Him who raised up our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead, and gave Him glory," and a throne at His right hand.
