Tyndale Tyndale New Testament (1534)
WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Of the tymes and seasons brethren ye have no nede that I write vnto you:
1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.
2 for ye youre selves knowe parfectly that the daye of the Lorde shall come even as a thefe in the nyght.
2 For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.
3 When they shall saye peace and no daunger than commeth on the soden destruccion as the travalynge of a woman with childe and they shall not scape.
3 For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape.
4 But ye brethren are not in darcknes that that daye shuld come on you as it were a thefe.
4 But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.
5 Ye are all the children of light and the children of the daye. We are not of the nyght nether of darcknes.
5 You are all children of light and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness,
6 Therfore let vs not slepe as do other: but let vs watch and be sober.
6 so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober.
7 For they that slepe slepe in the nyght: and they that be dronken are dronken in the nyght.
7 For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.
8 But let vs which are of the daye be sober armed with the brest plate of fayth and love and with hope of salvacion as an helmet.
8 But since we belong to the day, let’s be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.
9 For god hath not apoynted vs vnto wrath: but to obtayne salvacion by the meanes of oure lorde Iesu Christ
9 For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
10 which died for vs: that whether we wake or slepe we shuld lyve togedder with him.
10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11 Wherfore comforte youre selves togedder and edifie one another even as ye do.
11 Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.
12 We beseche you brethren that ye knowe them which laboure amonge you and have the oversight of you in the Lorde and geve you exhortacion
12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,
13 that ye have them the more in love for their workes sake and be at peace with them.
13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
14 We desyre you brethren warne them that are vnruly comforte the feble mynded forbeare the weake have continuall pacience towarde all men.
14 We exhort you, brothers: Admonish the disorderly; encourage the faint-hearted; support the weak; be patient toward all.
15 Se that none recopence evill for evyll vnto eny man: but ever folowe that which is good both amonge youre selves and to all men.
15 See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good for one another and for all.
16 Reioyce ever.
16 Always rejoice.
17 Praye continually.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In all thinges geve thankes. For this is the wyll of God in Christ Iesu towarde you.
18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.
19 Quenche not the sprete.
19 Don’t quench the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyinge.
20 Don’t despise prophecies.
21 Examen all thinges and kepe that which is good.
21 Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.
22 Abstayne from all suspicious thinges.
22 Abstain from every form of evil.
23 The very God of peace sanctifie you thorow out. And I praye God that youre whole sprete soulse and body be kept fautlesse vnto the comynge of oure Lorde Iesus Christ
23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faythfull is he which called you: which will also do it.
24 He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it.
25 Brethren praye for vs.
25 Brothers, pray for us.
26 Grete all the brethren with an holy kysse.
26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you in the Lorde that this pistle be reed vnto all the holy brethren.
27 I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers.
28 The grace of the Lorde Iesus Christ be with you. Amen. ‘The fyrst pistle vnto the Tessalonyans sent from Athens.’
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 5:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Thessalonians (Homily IX)

Nothing, as it seems, is so curious, and so fondly prone to pry into things obscure and concealed, as the nature of men. And this is wont to happen to it, when the mind is unsettled and in an imperfect state.

  2. Quotes verse 5:22 Polycarp of Smyrna, Epistle to the Philippians (Chapters VIII–XIV)

I exhort you, therefore, that ye abstain from covetousness, and that ye be chaste and truthful. "Abstain from every form of evil." For if a man cannot govern himself in such matters, how shall he enjoin them on others?

… as well as a spiritual man; saying thus in the first Epistle to the Thessalonians, "Now the God of peace sanctify you perfect (perfectos); and may your spirit, and soul, and body be preserved whole without complaint to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ." Now what was his object in praying that these three--that is, soul, body, and spirit--might …

… this pilgrimage received "an earnest" that we should now be light, whilst as yet we "are saved by hope," and are the children of light, and the children of the day,--not the children of the night nor of the darkness, which yet we have been. Betwixt whom and us, in this as yet uncertain state of human knowledge, Thou only …

  5. Quotes verse 5:3 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXVII)

For Paul too saith this, writing on this wise, "When they shall speak of peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them;" and to show how unexpected, He said, "as travail upon a woman with child." How then doth He say, "after the tribulation of those days?" For if there be luxury then, and peace, and safety, as Paul …
