1 I do you to wit brethren of the grace of god which is geven in the congregacions of Macedonia
1 Moreover, brothers, we make known to you the grace of God which has been given in the assemblies of Macedonia,
2 how that the aboundaunce of their reioysing is that they are tried with moche tribulacion. And therto though they were excedinge poore yet haue they geue excedinge richly and that in singlenesse.
2 how in a severe ordeal of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their generosity.
3 For to their powers (I beare recorde) yee and beyonde their power they were willynge of their owne accorde
3 Pues de su grado [han dado] conforme á sus fuerzas, yo testifico, y aun sobre sus fuerzas;
3 For according to their power, I testify, yes and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord,
4 and prayed vs with great instaunce that we wolde receave their benefite and suffre them to be parttakers with other in ministrynge to the saynctes.
4 begging us with much entreaty to receive this grace and the fellowship in the service to the saints.
5 And this they did not as we loked for: but gave their awne selves fyrst to the lorde and after vnto vs by the will of God:
5 Y no como [lo] esperábamos, mas aun á sí mismos se dieron primeramente al Señor, y á nosotros por la voluntad de Dios.
5 This was not as we had expected, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God.
6 so that we coulde not but desyre Titus to acomplysshe the same benivolence amonge you also even as he had begonne.
6 So we urged Titus, that as he had made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace.
7 Now therfore as ye are ryche in all parties in fayth in worde in knowledge in all fervetnes and in love which ye have to vs: even so se that ye be plenteons in this benivolence.
7 But as you abound in everything—in faith, utterance, knowledge, all earnestness, and in your love to us—see that you also abound in this grace.
8 Thys saye I not as commaundynge: but be cause other are so fervent therfore prove I youre love whether it be perfait or no.
8 I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love.
9 Ye knowe the liberalitie of oure lorde Iesus Christ which though he were riche yet for youre sakes be came poore: that ye thorow his povertie myght be made ryche.
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.
10 And I geve counsell hereto. For this is expedient for you which beganne not to do only: but also to will a yeare agoo.
10 I give advice in this: it is expedient for you who were the first to start a year ago, not only to do, but also to be willing.
11 Now therfore performe the dede: that as ther was in you a redines to will even so ye maye performe the dede of that which ye have.
11 But now complete the doing also, that as there was the readiness to be willing, so there may be the completion also out of your ability.
12 For if ther be fyrst a willynge mynde it is accepted accordynge to that a man hath and not accordinge to that he hath not.
12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don’t have.
13 It is not my mynde that other be set at ease and ye brought into combraunce:
13 Porque no [digo esto] para que haya para otros desahogo, y para vosotros apretura;
13 For this is not that others may be eased and you distressed,
14 but that ther be egalnes now at this tyme that youre aboundaunce sucker their lacke: that their aboundaunce maye supplie youre lacke: that ther maye be equalite
14 Sino para que en este tiempo, con igualdad, vuestra abundancia supla la falta de ellos, para que también la abundancia de ellos supla vuestra falta, porque haya igualdad;
14 but for equality. Your abundance at this present time supplies their lack, that their abundance also may become a supply for your lack, that there may be equality.
15 agreynge to that which is written. He that gaddered moche had never the more aboundaunce and he that gaddered lytell had never the lesse.
15 As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”
16 Thankes be vnto god which put in the hert of Titus the same good mynde toward you.
16 But thanks be to God, who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus.
17 For he accepted the request yee rather he was so well willynge that of his awne accorde came vnto you.
17 For he indeed accepted our exhortation, but being himself very earnest, he went out to you of his own accord.
18 We haue sent with him that brother whose laude is in the gospell thorow out all the congregacions:
18 Y enviamos juntamente con él al hermano cuya alabanza en el evangelio [es] por todas las iglesias;
18 We have sent together with him the brother whose praise in the Good News is known throughout all the assemblies.
19 and not so only but is also chosen of the congregacions to be a felowe with vs in oure iorney concerninge this benivolence that is ministred by vs vnto the prayse of the lorde and to stere vp youre prompt mynde.
19 Not only so, but he was also appointed by the assemblies to travel with us in this grace, which is served by us to the glory of the Lord himself, and to show our readiness.
20 For thys we eschue that eny man shuld rebuke vs in this plenteous distribucion that is ministred by vs
20 Evitando que nadie nos vitupere en esta abundancia que ministramos;
20 We are avoiding this, that any man should blame us concerning this abundance which is administered by us.
21 and therfore make provision for honest thynges not in the sight of god only but also in the sight of men.
21 Having regard for honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
22 We have sent with them a brother of oures whom we have ofte tymes proved diliget in many thynges but now moche more diligent. The great confidence which I have in you: hath caused me this to do:
22 Enviamos también con ellos á nuestro hermano, al cual muchas veces hemos experimentado diligente, mas ahora mucho más con la mucha confianza que [tiene] en vosotros.
22 We have sent with them our brother whom we have many times proved earnest in many things, but now much more earnest, by reason of the great confidence which he has in you.
23 partly for Titus sake which is my felowe and helper as concernynge you partly because of other which are oure brethren and the messengers of the congregacions and the glory of Christ.
23 As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for you. As for our brothers, they are the apostles of the assemblies, the glory of Christ.
24 Wherfore shewe vnto them the proffe of youre love and of the reioysynge that we have of you that the congregacions maye se it.
24 Therefore show the proof of your love to them before the assemblies, and of our boasting on your behalf.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 8:7 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Corinthians (Homily XVII)

    See again his exhortation accompanied with commendations, greater commendations. And he said not, that ye give,' but "that ye abound; in faith," namely, of the gifts, and "in utterance," the word of wisdom, and "knowledge," namely, of the doctrines, and "in all earnestness," to the attaining of all other virtue.
