1 I testifie therfore before god and before the lorde Iesu Christ which shall iudge quicke and deed at his aperynge in his kyngdom

3 For the tyme will come when they wyll not suffer wholsome doctryne: but after their awne lustes shall they (whose eares ytche) gett the an heepe of teachers
4 and shall turne their eares from the trueth and shalbe geven vnto fables.
5 But watch thou in all thynges and suffre adversitie and do the worke of an evangelist fulfill thyne office vnto the vtmost.
6 For I am now redy to be offered and the tyme of my departynge is at honde.
7 I have fought a good fight and have fulfilled my course and have kept the fayth.
7 He peleado la buena batalla, he acabado la carrera, he guardado la fe.
8 From hence forth is layde vp for me a croune of rightewesnes which the lorde that is a righteous iudge shall geve me at that daye: not to me only but vnto all them that love his commynge.
9 Make spede to come vnto me at once.

15 of whom be thou ware also. For he withstode oure preachynge sore.
16 At my fyrst answerynge no man assissted me but all forsoke me. I praye God that it maye not be layde to their charges:
16 En mi primera defensa ninguno me ayudó, antes me desampararon todos: no les sea imputado.
17 not withstondinge the Lorde assisted me and stregthed me that by me the preachinge shuld be fulfilled to the vtmost and that all the gentyls shuld heare. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lyon.
18 And the Lorde shall delivre me from all evyll doynge and shall kepe me vnto his hevenly kyngdome. To who be prayse for ever and ever. Amen.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 4:9 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Timothy (Homily X)

It is worth while to enquire why he calls Timothy to him, inasmuch as he was intrusted with a Church, and a whole nation. It was not from arrogance.

  2. Quotes verse 4:10 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XIII)

and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me." From this he shows that he was always attached to and inseparable from him.

  3. Quotes verse 4:16 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XIII, Chapters XXV–XXVII)

… doth he grieve for certain trees, which did not afford him the fruit due unto him, when he saith, "At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge." For these fruits are due to those who minister spiritual doctrine, through their understanding of …

  4. Quotes verse 4:2 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXIII)

How then doth He say elsewhere, "Reprove, rebuke, exhort," and, "Them that sin rebuke before all?" And Christ too to Peter, "Go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone," and if he neglect to hear, add to thyself another also; and if not even so doth he yield, declare it to the church likewise?" 5. Quotes verse 4:1 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XVII, Chapters 17–18)

For, being slain by them, He has risen again, and has requited them meanwhile by temporary discipline, save that for those who are not corrected He keeps it in store for the time when He shall judge the quick and the dead. For the Lord Jesus Himself, in pointing out that very man to the apostles as His betrayer, quoted …
