1 Ther is then no damnacion to them which are in Christ Iesu which walke not after the flesshe: but after the sprete.
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
2 For the lawe of the sprete that bringeth life thorowe Iesus Christ hath delivered me from the lawe of synne and deeth.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.
3 For what the lawe coulde not doo in as moche it was weake because of the flesshe: that performed God and sent his sonne in the similitude of synfull flesshe and by synne daned synne in the flesshe:
3 For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
4 that the rightewesnes requyred of the lawe myght be fulfilled in vs which walke not after the flesshe but after the sprete.
4 that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
5 For they that are carnall are carnally mynded. But they that are spirituall are gostly mynded.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
6 To be carnally mynded is deeth. But to be spiritually mynded is lyfe and peace.
6 For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace;
7 Because that the flesshly mynde is emnyte agaynst God: for it is not obedient to the lawe of God nether can be.
7 because the mind of the flesh is hostile toward God, for it is not subject to God’s law, neither indeed can it be.
8 So then they that are geven to the flesshe cannot please God.
8 Those who are in the flesh can’t please God.
9 But ye are not geven to the flesshe but to the sprete: yf so be that the sprite of God dwell in you. If ther be eny man that hath not the sprite of Christ the same is none of his.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.
10 Yf Christ be in you the body is deed because of synne: but the sprite is lyfe for rightewesnes sake.
10 If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11 Wherfore if the sprite of him that raysed vppe Iesus from deeth dwell in you: even he that raysed vp Christ from deeth shall quycken youre mortall bodyes because that this sprite dwelleth in you.
11 But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
12 Therfore brethren we are nowe detters not to the flesshe to live after the flesshe.
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesshe ye must dye. But yf ye mortifie the dedes of the body by the helpe of the sprite ye shall lyve.
13 For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 For as many as are led by the sprete of God: they are the sonnes of god.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.
15 For ye have not receaved the sprete of bondage to feare eny moare but ye have receaved the sprite of adopcion wherby we crye Abba father.
15 For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
16 The same sprete certifieth oure sprete that we are the sonnes of God.
16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God;
17 Yf we be sonnes we are also heyres the heyres I meane of God and heyres anexed with Christ: if so be that we suffer togedder that we maye be glorified to gedder.
17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.
18 For I suppose that the affliccions of this lyfe are not worthy of the glory which shalbe shewed vpon vs.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us.
19 Also the fervent desyre of the creatures abideth lokynge when the sonnes of God shall appere
19 For the creation waits with eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.
20 because the creatures are subdued to vanyte agaynst their will: but for his will which subdueth them in hope.
20 For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but because of him who subjected it, in hope
21 For the very creatures shalbe delivered from the bondage of corrupcion into the glorious lybertie of the sonnes of God.
21 that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of God.
22 For we knowe that every creature groneth with vs also and travayleth in payne even vnto this tyme.
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.
23 Not they only but even we also which have the fyrst frutes of the sprite morne in oureselves and wayte for the (adopcio) and loke for the delivraunce of oure bodyes.
23 Not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for adoption, the redemption of our body.
24 For we are savyd by hope. But hope that is sene is no hope. For how can a man hope for that which he seyth?
24 For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees?
24 τῇ γὰρ ἐλπίδι ἐσώθημεν· ἐλπὶς δὲ βλεπομένη οὐκ ἔστιν ἐλπίς· ὃ γὰρ βλέπει τις, τί καὶ ἐλπίζει;
25 But and yf we hope for that we se not then do we with pacience abyde for it.
25 But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.
26 Lyke wyse the sprite also helpeth oure infirmities. For we knowe not what to desyre as we ought: but the sprete maketh intercession mightely for vs with gronynges which cannot be expressid with tonge.
26 In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hertes knoweth what is the meaninge of the sprite: for he maketh intercession for the sayntes accordinge to the pleasure of god.
27 He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.
28 For we knowe that all thinges worke for the best vnto them that love God which also are called of purpose.
28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.
29 For those which he knewe before he also ordeyned before that they shuld be lyke fassioned vnto the shape of his sonne that he myght be the fyrst begotten sonne amonge many brethren.
29 For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
30 Morover which he apoynted before them he also called. And which he called them also he iustified which he iustified them he also glorified.
30 Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.
31 What shall we then saye vnto these thinges? yf god be on oure syde: who can be agaynst vs?
31 What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
31 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν πρὸς ταῦτα; εἰ ὁ Θεὸς ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, τίς καθ᾽ ἡμῶν;
32 which spared not his awne sonne but gave him for vs all: how shall he not with him geve vs all thinges also?
32 He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?
32 ὅς γε τοῦ ἰδίου υἱοῦ οὐκ ἐφείσατο, ἀλλ᾽ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάντων παρέδωκεν αὐτόν, πῶς οὐχὶ καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ἡμῖν χαρίσεται;
33 Who shall laye eny thinge to the charge of goddes chosen? it is god that iustifieth:
33 Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies.
34 who then shall condempne? it is Christ which is deed the rather which is rysen agayne which is also on the ryght honde of God and maketh intercession for vs.
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
35 Who shall seperate vs from the love of god? shall tribulacion? or anguysshe? or persecucion? other honger? other nakednesse? other parell? other swearde?
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
35 τίς ἡμᾶς χωρίσει ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Χριστοῦ; θλῖψις ἢ στενοχωρία ἢ διωγμὸς ἢ λιμὸς ἢ γυμνότης ἢ κίνδυνος ἢ μάχαιρα;
36 As it is written: For thy sake are we kylled all daye longe and are counted as shepe apoynted to be slayne.
36 Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
37 Neverthelesse in all these thinges we overcome strongly thorow his helpe that loved vs.
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 Ye and I am sure that nether deeth nether lyfe nether angels nor rule nether power nether thinges present nether thinges to come
38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nether heyth nether loweth nether eny other creature shalbe able to departe vs from the love of God shewed in Christ Iesu oure lorde.
39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 8:12 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Romans (Homily XIV)

After showing how great the reward of a spiritual life is, and that it maketh Christ to dwell in us, and that it quickeneth our mortal bodies, and wingeth them to heaven, and rendereth the way of virtue easier, he next fitly introduces an exhortation to this purpose.

  2. Quotes verse 8:36 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XXI)

… by the prophet and by Paul, of whom the apostle, calling to mind the Scripture, says in the Epistle addressed to the Romans, "As it is written, for thy sake we are killed all the day long, we are counted as sheep for the slaughter." But here the expression "all the day long" is put for all this time during …

  3. Quotes verse 8:34 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IX)

They would perchance have been troubled, and have vomited it forth, and Thou wouldest hear them when they cried unto Thee; for by a true death in the flesh He died for us, who now maketh intercession for us with Thee.

  4. Quotes verse 8:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XVI)

  5. Quotes verse 8:17 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture III)

Make ready then the vessel of thy soul, that thou mayest become a son of God, and an heir of God, and joint-heir with Christ; if, indeed, thou art preparing thyself that thou mayest receive; if thou art drawing nigh in faith that thou mayest be made faithful; if of set purpose thou art putting off the old man.
