VUL Clementine Vulgate
PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
8 Permanebo autem Ephesi usque ad Pentecosten.
13 Vigilate, state in fide, viriliter agite, et confortamini.
14 Omnia vestra in caritate fiant.
18 refecerunt enim et meum spiritum, et vestrum. Cognoscite ergo qui hujusmodi sunt.
20 Salutant vos omnes fratres. Salutate invicem in osculo sancto.
21 Salutatio, mea manu Pauli.
23 Gratia Domini nostri Jesu Christi vobiscum.
24 Caritas mea cum omnibus vobis in Christo Jesu. Amen.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 16:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Corinthians (Homily XLIII)

Having completed his discourse concerning doctrines, and being about to enter upon that which belongs rather to morals, he dismisses every thing else and proceeds to the chief of good things, discoursing about alms. Nor does he discuss morals in general, but when he hath treated of this matter alone, he leaves off.

  2. Quotes verse 16:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLVI)

Wherefore Paul also said, "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith." After this He points out the thing to be superfluous too, not hurtful only; in that, after the land hath been tilled, and there is no need of anything, then this enemy sows again; as the heretics also do, who for no other cause than vainglory inject their proper …

  3. Quotes verse 16:20 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XXIII)

The kiss therefore is reconciliation, and for this reason holy: as the blessed Paul somewhere cried, saying, Greet ye one another with a holy kiss; and Peter, with a kiss of charity.
