1 Canticum ipsi David, quando domus ædificabatur post captivitatem. [Cantate Domino canticum novum; cantate Domino omnis terra.
96:1 CANTAD á Jehová canción nueva; cantad á Jehová, toda la tierra.
96:1 Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.
2 Cantate Domino, et benedicite nomini ejus; annuntiate de die in diem salutare ejus.
96:2 Sing to Yahweh! Bless his name! Proclaim his salvation from day to day!
3 Annuntiate inter gentes gloriam ejus; in omnibus populis mirabilia ejus.
96:3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
96:4 For Yahweh is great, and greatly to be praised! He is to be feared above all gods.
96:5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.
6 Confessio et pulchritudo in conspectu ejus; sanctimonia et magnificentia in sanctificatione ejus.
96:6 Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Afferte Domino, patriæ gentium, afferte Domino gloriam et honorem;
96:7 Ascribe to Yahweh, you families of nations, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
8 afferte Domino gloriam nomini ejus. Tollite hostias, et introite in atria ejus;
96:8 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9 adorate Dominum in atrio sancto ejus. Commoveatur a facie ejus universa terra;
96:9 Worship Yahweh in holy array. Tremble before him, all the earth.
10 dicite in gentibus, quia Dominus regnavit.
96:10 Say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns.” The world is also established. It can’t be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.
11 Lætentur cæli, et exsultet terra; commoveatur mare et plenitudo ejus;
96:11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and its fullness!
96:12 Let the field and all that is in it exult! Then all the trees of the woods shall sing for joy
13 a facie Domini, quia venit, quoniam venit judicare terram. Judicabit orbem terræ in æquitate, et populos in veritate sua.]
96:13 before Yahweh; for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, the peoples with his truth.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 96.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 96:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter VI)

    As with David: "The gods of the heathen are idols of demons;" and, "Ye shall not follow other gods." For in that he says "the gods of the heathen"--but the heathen are ignorant of the true God--and calls them "other gods," he bars their claim [to be looked upon] as gods at all.

  2. Quotes verse 96:4 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XI)

    Not surely that Thou mightest know them through me, but that I may awaken my own love and that of my readers towards Thee, that we may all say, "Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised." I have already said, and shall say, for the love of Thy love do I this.

  3. Quotes verse 96:11 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture III)

    1. Rejoice, ye heavens, and let the earth be glad, for those who are to be sprinkled with hyssop, and cleansed with the spiritual hyssop, the power of Him to whom at His Passion drink was offered on hyssop and a reed.

  4. Quotes verse 96:11 John of Damascus, An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith (Book II, Chapters IV–VI)

    So that when the divine Scripture saith, Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, it is the angels in heaven and the men on earth that are invited to rejoice.

  5. Quotes verse 96:1 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter IX)

    … the treasure new and old, the two covenants; the old, that giving of the law which took place formerly; and He points out as the new, that manner of life required by the Gospel, of which David says, "Sing unto the Lord a new song;" and Esaias, "Sing unto the Lord a new hymn.
