1 In finem, pro susceptione matutina. Psalmus David. 2 [Deus, Deus meus, respice in me: quare me dereliquisti? longe a salute mea verba delictorum meorum. 8 Omnes videntes me deriserunt me; locuti sunt labiis, et moverunt caput. 9 Speravit in Domino, eripiat eum: salvum faciat eum, quoniam vult eum. 13 Circumdederunt me vituli multi; tauri pingues obsederunt me. 14 Aperuerunt super me os suum, sicut leo rapiens et rugiens. 15 Sicut aqua effusus sum, et dispersa sunt omnia ossa mea: factum est cor meum tamquam cera liquescens in medio ventris mei. 16 Aruit tamquam testa virtus mea, et lingua mea adhæsit faucibus meis: et in pulverem mortis deduxisti me. 17◆ Quoniam circumdederunt me canes multi; concilium malignantium obsedit me. Foderunt manus meas et pedes meos; 18 dinumeraverunt omnia ossa mea. Ipsi vero consideraverunt et inspexerunt me. 19 Diviserunt sibi vestimenta mea, et super vestem meam miserunt sortem. 20 Tu autem, Domine, ne elongaveris auxilium tuum a me; ad defensionem meam conspice. 21 Erue a framea, Deus, animam meam, et de manu canis unicam meam. 22 Salva me ex ore leonis, et a cornibus unicornium humilitatem meam. 23 Narrabo nomen tuum fratribus meis; in medio ecclesiæ laudabo te. 24 Qui timetis Dominum, laudate eum; universum semen Jacob, glorificate eum. 25 Timeat eum omne semen Israël, quoniam non sprevit, neque despexit deprecationem pauperis, nec avertit faciem suam a me: et cum clamarem ad eum, exaudivit me. 26 Apud te laus mea in ecclesia magna; vota mea reddam in conspectu timentium eum.

Why does my Bible say something different?
- Psalm 22:16: “they pierced” or “like a lion”?
Most Hebrew manuscripts of Psalm 22:16 (22:17 in Hebrew) read ka’ari, “like a lion, my hands and my feet,” a line with no verb. The Greek Septuagint reads “they dug my hands and my feet,” which Christian Bibles have long rendered “pierced.” A Psalms fragment from the Judean desert has a different spelling that may be a verb. What the original Hebrew said is honestly debated.
What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 22.
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
All that see Me have derided Me; they have spoken with their lips; they have wagged their head, [saying] He hoped in God, let Him deliver Him, let Him save Him, since He delighteth in Him." Ye see, beloved, what is the example which has been given us; for if the Lord thus humbled Himself, what shall we do who …
They now ask of me judgment, and dare to draw near to God." And again in other words, through another prophet, He says, "They pierced My hands and My feet, and for My vesture they cast lots." And indeed David, the king and prophet, who uttered these things, suffered none of them; but Jesus Christ stretched forth His hands, being …

And elsewhere he mentions also the image of the cross, saying on this wise, "They pierced my hand and my feet," and those things which the soldiers were emboldened to do, he adds with all exactness, "For they parted my …
