VUL Clementine Vulgate
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 Psalmus ipsi David. [Cantate Domino canticum novum, quia mirabilia fecit. Salvavit sibi dextera ejus, et brachium sanctum ejus.
98:1 Salmo.
2 Notum fecit Dominus salutare suum; in conspectu gentium revelavit justitiam suam.
4 Jubilate Deo, omnis terra; cantate, et exsultate, et psallite.
98:4 Cantad alegres á Jehová, toda la tierra; levantad la voz, y aplaudid, y salmead.
5 Psallite Domino in cithara; in cithara et voce psalmi;
6 in tubis ductilibus, et voce tubæ corneæ. Jubilate in conspectu regis Domini:
98:7 Brame la mar y su plenitud; el mundo y los que en él habitan;
8 Flumina plaudent manu; simul montes exsultabunt
9 a conspectu Domini: quoniam venit judicare terram. Judicabit orbem terrarum in justitia, et populos in æquitate.]

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 98.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XCVII)

    This Psalm is entitled, "A Psalm of David's, when his land was restored." Let us refer the whole to Christ, if we wish to keep the road of a right understanding: let us not depart from the corner stone, lest our understanding suffer a fall: in Him let that become fixed, which wavered with unstable motion; let that rest upon …

But as bringing salvation, thus: "God hath made known His salvation (salutare) in the sight of the heathen." For He is indeed Saviour, as being the Son and Word of God; but salutary, …
