1 (31-1) For the Leader. A Psalm of David. (31-2) In thee, O LORD, have I taken refuge; let me never be ashamed; deliver me in Thy righteousness.
1 For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. In you, Yahweh, I take refuge. Let me never be disappointed. Deliver me in your righteousness.
2 (31-3) Incline Thine ear unto me, deliver me speedily; be Thou to me a rock of refuge, even a fortress of defence, to save me.
2 Bow down your ear to me. Deliver me speedily. Be to me a strong rock, a house of defense to save me.
3 (31-4) For Thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for Thy name's sake lead me and guide me.
3 For you are my rock and my fortress, therefore for your name’s sake lead me and guide me.
4 (31-5) Bring me forth out of the net that they have hidden for me; for Thou art my stronghold.
4 Pluck me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me, for you are my stronghold.
5 (31-6) Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast redeemed me, O LORD, Thou God of truth.
5 En tu mano encomiendo mi espíritu: tú me has redimido, oh Jehová, Dios de verdad.
5 Into your hand I commend my spirit. You redeem me, Yahweh, God of truth.
6 (31-7) I hate them that regard lying vanities; but I trust in the LORD.
6 I hate those who regard lying vanities, but I trust in Yahweh.
7 (31-8) I will be glad and rejoice in Thy lovingkindness; for Thou hast seen mine affliction, Thou hast taken cognizance of the troubles of my soul,
7 Me gozaré y alegraré en tu misericordia; porque has visto mi aflicción; has conocido mi alma en las angustias.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness, for you have seen my affliction. You have known my soul in adversities.
8 (31-9) And Thou hast not given me over into the hand of the enemy; Thou hast set my feet in a broad place.
8 You have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a large place.
9 (31-10) Be gracious unto me, O LORD, for I am in distress; mine eye wasteth away with vexation, yea, my soul and my body.
9 Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief.
10 (31-11) For my life is spent in sorrow, and my years in sighing; my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are wasted away.
10 For my life is spent with sorrow, my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my iniquity. My bones are wasted away.
11 (31-12) Because of all mine adversaries I am become a reproach, yea, unto my neighbours exceedingly, and a dread to mine acquaintance; they that see me without flee from me.
11 Because of all my adversaries I have become utterly contemptible to my neighbors, a horror to my acquaintances. Those who saw me on the street fled from me.
12 (31-13) I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind; I am like a useless vessel.
12 He sido olvidado de [su] corazón como un muerto: he venido á ser como un vaso perdido.
12 I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man. I am like broken pottery.
13 (31-14) For I have heard the whispering of many, terror on every side; while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
13 For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side, while they conspire together against me, they plot to take away my life.
14 (31-15) But as for me, I have trusted in Thee, O LORD; I have said: 'Thou art my God.'
14 Mas yo en ti confié, oh Jehová: yo dije: Dios mío eres tú.
14 But I trust in you, Yahweh. I said, “You are my God.”
15 (31-16) My times are in Thy hand; deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.
15 My times are in your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.
16 (31-17) Make Thy face to shine upon Thy servant; save me in Thy lovingkindness.
16 Make your face to shine on your servant. Save me in your loving kindness.
17 (31-18) O LORD, let me not be ashamed, for I have called upon Thee; let the wicked be ashamed, let them be put to silence in the nether-world.
17 Let me not be disappointed, Yahweh, for I have called on you. Let the wicked be disappointed. Let them be silent in Sheol.
18 (31-19) Let the lying lips be dumb, which speak arrogantly against the righteous, with pride and contempt.
18 Let the lying lips be mute, which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.
19 (31-20) Oh how abundant is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee; which Thou hast wrought for them that take their refuge in Thee, in the sight of the sons of men!
19 Oh how great is your goodness, which you have laid up for those who fear you, which you have worked for those who take refuge in you, before the sons of men!
20 (31-21) Thou hidest them in the covert of Thy presence from the plottings of man; Thou concealest them in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
20 In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.
21 (31-22) Blessed be the LORD; for He hath shown me His wondrous lovingkindness in an entrenched city.
21 Praise be to Yahweh, for he has shown me his marvelous loving kindness in a strong city.
22 (31-23) As for me, I said in my haste: 'I am cut off from before Thine eyes'; nevertheless Thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto Thee.
22 As for me, I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before your eyes.” Nevertheless you heard the voice of my petitions when I cried to you.
23 (31-24) O love the LORD, all ye His godly ones; the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully repayeth him that acteth haughtily.
23 Oh love Yahweh, all you his saints! Yahweh preserves the faithful, and fully recompenses him who behaves arrogantly.
24 (31-25) Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all ye that wait for the LORD.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in Yahweh.

  3. Cita 31:19 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 17–19)

However, they think that the divine oracles are not altogether silent on this point; for they ask to what purpose is it said, "How great is Thy goodness which Thou hast hidden for them that fear Thee," if it be not to teach us that the great and hidden sweetness of God's mercy is concealed in order that men may …

  4. Cita 31:19 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XXI, Chapters 22–24)

But that these perversely compassionate persons may see what is the purport of these words, "How great is the abundance of Thy sweetness, Lord, which Thou hast hidden for them that fear Thee," let them read what follows: "And Thou hast perfected it for them that hope in Thee." For what means, "Thou hast hidden it for them that fear …
