1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; incline your ears to my understanding, 2 so you may learn about discretion and your lips may protect knowledge. 3 For the lips of an adulteress drip with honey and her mouth is smoother than oil, 4 but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, cutting like a sharp sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps go all the way to Sheol. 6 She gives no thought to the path of life. Her footsteps wander; she does not know where she is going. 7 Now, my sons, listen to me; do not turn away from listening to the words of my mouth. 8 Keep your path far away from her and do not come near the door of her house. 9 In that way you will not give away your honor to others or years of your life to a cruel person; 10 strangers will not feast on your wealth; what you have worked for will not go into the house of strangers. 11 At the end of your life you will groan when your flesh and your body waste away. 12 You will say, “How I hated instruction and my heart despised correction! 13 I would not obey my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. 14 I was almost completely ruined in the midst of the assembly, among the gathering of the people.” 15 Drink water from your own cistern and drink running water from your own well. 16 Should your springs overflow everywhere and your streams of water flow in the public squares? 17 Let them be for yourself alone and not for strangers with you. 18 May your fountain be blessed and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth, 19 for she is a loving deer and a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; may you be continually intoxicated by her love. 20 For why should you, my son, be captivated by an adulteress; why should you embrace the breasts of an immoral woman? 21 Yahweh sees everything a person does and watches all the paths he takes. 22 A wicked person will be seized by his own iniquities; the cords of his sin will hold him tight. 23 He will die because he lacks instruction; he is led astray by his great foolishness.

… in man." For He called all men that mourn; and granting forgiveness to those who had been led into captivity by their sins, He loosed them from their chains, of whom Solomon says, "Every one shall be holden with the cords of his own sins." Therefore did the Spirit of God descend upon Him, [the Spirit] of Him who had …

  2. Cita 5:16 Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the First Epistle of John (Homily VII)

For it is even this Holy Spirit, whom the bad cannot receive, even He is that Fountain of which the Scripture saith, "Let the fountain of thy water be thine own, and let no stranger partake with thee." For all who love not God, are strangers, are antichrists.

  3. Cita 5:2–4 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXIII)

… "Give not heed to a bad woman: for honey droppeth from the lips of a woman that is an harlot, which, for a season, is luscious unto thy throat; but afterwards thou shalt find it more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword." Unto these last then let us listen, not unto those.

  4. Cita 5:15 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture XVI)

Let then thus much suffice concerning those outcasts; and now let us return to the divine Scriptures, and let us drink waters out of our own cisterns [that is, the holy Fathers ], and out of our own springing wells.

  5. Cita 5:22 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm XXXV)
