WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 Wisdom has made her house, putting up her seven pillars.
1 LA sabiduría edificó su casa, labró sus siete columnas;
1 Wisdom has built her house. She has carved out her seven pillars.
2 She has put her fat beasts to death; her wine is mixed, her table is ready.
2 She has prepared her meat. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her women-servants; her voice goes out to the highest places of the town, saying,
3 She has sent out her maidens. She cries from the highest places of the city:
4 Whoever is simple, let him come in here; and to him who has no sense, she says:
4 Cualquiera simple, venga acá. A los faltos de cordura dijo:
4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
5 Come, take of my bread, and of my wine which is mixed.
5 “Come, eat some of my bread, Drink some of the wine which I have mixed!
6 Give up the simple ones and have life, and go in the way of knowledge.
6 Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding.”
7 He who gives teaching to a man of pride gets shame for himself; he who says sharp words to a sinner gets a bad name.
7 One who corrects a mocker invites insult. One who reproves a wicked man invites abuse.
8 Do not say sharp words to a man of pride, or he will have hate for you; make them clear to a wise man, and you will be dear to him.
8 Don’t reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise person, and he will love you.
9 Give teaching to a wise man, and he will become wiser; give training to an upright man, and his learning will be increased.
9 Instruct a wise person, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous person, and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the Lord is the start of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One gives a wise mind
10 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be increased, and the years of your life will be long.
11 For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if your heart is full of pride, you only will have the pain of it.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.
13 The foolish woman is full of noise; she has no sense at all.
13 The foolish woman is loud, undisciplined, and knows nothing.
14 Seated at the door of her house, in the high places of the town,
14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 Crying out to those who go by, going straight on their way, she says:
15 Para llamar á los que pasan por el camino, que van por sus caminos derechos.
15 to call to those who pass by, who go straight on their ways,
16 Whoever is simple, let him come in here: and to him who is without sense, she says:
16 Cualquiera simple, [dice], venga acá. A los faltos de cordura dijo:
16 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.” As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
17 Drink taken without right is sweet, and food in secret is pleasing.
17 “Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant.”
18 But he does not see that the dead are there, that her guests are in the deep places of the underworld.
18 But he doesn’t know that the departed spirits are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

Woe, woe, by what steps was I dragged down "to the depths of hell!" --toiling and turmoiling through want of Truth, when I sought after Thee, my God,--to Thee I confess it, who hadst mercy on me when I had not yet confessed,--sought after Thee not according to the understanding of the mind, in which Thou desiredst that I should …

  4. Quotes verse 9:10 Basil of Caesarea, Hexaemeron (Homily I)

Again, we call "beginning" the essential and first part from which a thing proceeds, such as the foundation of a house, the keel of a vessel; it is in this sense that it is said, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," that is to say that piety is, as it were, the groundwork and foundation of …

I came upon that bold woman, who "is simple, and knoweth nothing," the enigma of Solomon, sitting "at the door of the house on a seat," and saying, "Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant."
