1 Let the Lord be praised. Make a new song to the Lord, let his praise be in the meeting of his saints. 2 Let Israel have joy in his maker; let the children of Zion be glad in their King. 3 Let them give praise to his name in the dance: let them make melody to him with instruments of brass and corded instruments of music. 4 For the Lord has pleasure in his people: he gives the poor in spirit a crown of salvation. 5 Let the saints have joy and glory: let them give cries of joy on their beds. 6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouths, and a two-edged sword in their hands; 7 To give the nations the reward of their sins, and the peoples their punishment; 8 To put their kings in chains, and their rulers in bands of iron; 9 To give them the punishment which is in the holy writings: this honour is given to all his saints. Praise be to the Lord.

What the Fathers said
Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).
How these were chosen
“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).
Let us praise the Lord both in voice, and in understanding, and in good works; and, as this Psalm exhorteth, let us sing unto Him a new song. It beginneth: "Sing ye to the Lord a new song. His praise is in the Church of the Saints" (ver. 1).

For now that the one Church in Judæa is cast off, the Churches of Christ are increased over all the world; and of them it is said in the Psalms, Sing unto the Lord a new song, His praise in the Congregation of Saints.
