Notes on this text (3)

Psalm 57 in Brenton = Psalm 58 in RV1909.

Brenton Brenton's English Septuagint
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 For the end. Destroy not: by David, for a memorial.
·
2 If ye do indeed speak righteousness, [then] do ye judge rightly, ye sons of men.
58:1 Al Músico principal: sobre No destruyas: Michtam de David. OH congregación, ¿pronunciáis en verdad justicia? ¿juzgáis rectamente, hijos de los hombres?
3 For ye work iniquities in [your] hearts in the earth: your hands plot unrighteousness.
4 Sinners have gone astray from the womb: they go astray from the belly: they speak lies.
5 Their venom is like [that] of a serpent; as [that] of a deaf asp, and that stops her ears;
58:4 Veneno tienen semejante al veneno de la serpiente: [son] como áspide sordo que cierra su oído;
6 which will not hear the voice of charmers, nor [heed] the charm prepared skilfully by the wise.
7 God has crushed their teeth in their mouth: God has broken the cheek-teeth of the lions.
8 They shall utterly pass away like water running through: he shall bend his bow till they shall fail.
9 They shall be destroyed as melted wax: the fire has fallen and they have not seen the sun.
10 Before your thorns feel the white thorn, he shall swallow you up as living, as in his wrath.
11 The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance of the ungodly: he shall wash his hands in the blood of the sinner.
12 And a man shall say, Verily then there is a reward for the righteous: verily there is a God that judges them in the earth.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 58.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LVII)

    Because then this Psalm is singing of the Passion of the Lord, see what is the title that it hath: "at the end." The end is Christ. Why hath He been called end? Not as one that consumeth, but one that consummateth....

  2. Quotes verse 58:3 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter X)

    As also David says, "The alienated are sinners from the womb: they go astray as soon as they are born." And it was on account of this that he, turning them to their Lord, prepared, in the spirit and power of Elias, a perfect people for the Lord.
