Notes on this text (1)
LSV Literal Standard Version
RV1909 Reina-Valera 1909
1 TO THE OVERSEER. “DO NOT DESTROY.” A MIKTAM OF DAVID. Is it true, O silent one, that you speak righteously? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men?
1 Al Músico principal: sobre No destruyas: Michtam de David. OH congregación, ¿pronunciáis en verdad justicia? ¿juzgáis rectamente, hijos de los hombres?
2 Even in heart you work iniquities, || In the land you ponder the violence of your hands.
3 The wicked have been estranged from the womb, || They have erred from the belly, speaking lies.
4 Their poison [is] as poison of a serpent, || As a deaf cobra shutting its ear,
4 Veneno tienen semejante al veneno de la serpiente: [son] como áspide sordo que cierra su oído;
5 Which does not listen to the voice of whisperers, || A charmer of most skillful charms.
6 O God, break their teeth in their mouth, || Break down the jaw-teeth of young lions, O YHWH.
7 They are melted as waters, || They go up and down for themselves, || His arrow proceeds as they cut themselves off.
8 He goes on as a snail that melts, || [As] an untimely birth of a woman, || They have not seen the sun.
9 Before your pots discern the bramble, || As living, He whirls away in His burning anger.
10 The righteous rejoices that he has seen vengeance, || He washes his steps in the blood of the wicked.
11 And man says: “Surely fruit [is] for the righteous: Surely there is a God judging in the earth!”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LVII)

Because then this Psalm is singing of the Passion of the Lord, see what is the title that it hath: "at the end." The end is Christ. Why hath He been called end? Not as one that consumeth, but one that consummateth....

  2. Quotes verse 58:3 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter X)

As also David says, "The alienated are sinners from the womb: they go astray as soon as they are born." And it was on account of this that he, turning them to their Lord, prepared, in the spirit and power of Elias, a perfect people for the Lord.
