6 Сего̀ ви́дѣвъ і҆и҃съ лежа́ща и҆ разꙋмѣ́въ, ꙗ҆́кѡ мнѡ́га лѣ̑та ᲂу҆жѐ и҆мѧ́ше (въ недꙋ́зѣ), гл҃а є҆мꙋ̀: хо́щеши ли цѣ́лъ бы́ти;
8 Dícele Jesús: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y anda.
9 Y luego aquel hombre fué sano, y tomó su lecho, é íbase. Y era sábado aquel día.
11 Respondióles: El que me sanó, él mismo me dijo: Toma tu lecho y anda.
12 Вопроси́ша же є҆го̀: кто̀ є҆́сть чл҃вѣ́къ рекі́й тѝ: возмѝ ѻ҆́дръ тво́й и҆ ходѝ;
14 Después le halló Jesús en el templo, y díjole: He aquí, has sido sanado; no peques más, porque no te venga alguna cosa peor.
22 Porque el Padre á nadie juzga, mas todo el juicio dió al Hijo;
28 No os maravilléis de esto; porque vendrá hora, cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz;
33 Vosotros enviasteis á Juan, y [él] dió testimonio á la verdad.
41 Gloria de los hombres no recibo.
44 Ка́кѡ вы̀ мо́жете вѣ́ровати, сла́вꙋ дрꙋ́гъ ѿ дрꙋ́га прїе́млюще, и҆ сла́вы, ꙗ҆́же ѿ є҆ди́нагѡ бг҃а, не и҆́щете;
47 А҆́ще ли тогѡ̀ писа́нїємъ не вѣ́рꙋете, ка́кѡ мои́мъ гл҃го́лѡмъ вѣ́рꙋ и҆́мете;
47 Y si á sus escritos no creéis, ¿cómo creeréis á mis palabras?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 5:2 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXIV)

    The lesson of the Gospel has just sounded in our ears, and made us intent to know what is the meaning of what has been read. This, I suppose, is looked for from me, this I promise, by the Lord's assistance, to explain as well as I can.

  2. Commentary 5:19 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter V — 19)

    John the evangelist, among his fellows and companions the other evangelists, received this special and peculiar gift from the Lord (on whose breast he reclined at the feast, hereby to signify that he was drinking deeper secrets from His inmost heart), to utter those things concerning the Son of God which may perhaps rouse the attentive minds of the little …

  3. Commentary 5:6 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily XXXVII)

    Great is the profit of the divine Scriptures, and all-sufficient is the aid which comes from them. And Paul declared this when he said, "Whatsoever things were written aforetime, were written aforetime for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." ( Rom. xv.
