1 A potom beše praznik jevrejski, i iziđe Isus u Jerusalim.
3 u kojima ležaše mnoštvo bolesnika, slepih, hromih, suvih, koji čekahu da se zaljuja voda;
5 A onde beše jedan čovek koji trideset i osam godina beše bolestan.
8 Reče mu Isus: Ustani, uzmi odar svoj i hodi.
8 Dícele Jesús: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y anda.
9 I odmah ozdravi čovek, i uzevši odar svoj hođaše. A taj dan beše subota.
11 A on im odgovori: Koji me isceli on mi reče: Uzmi odar svoj i hodi.
14 Después le halló Jesús en el templo, y díjole: He aquí, has sido sanado; no peques más, porque no te venga alguna cosa peor.
16 I zato gonjahu Jevreji Isusa, i gledahu da Ga ubiju, jer činjaše to u subotu.
17 A Isus im odgovaraše: Otac moj dosle čini, i ja činim.
19 A Isus odgovarajući reče im: Zaista, zaista vam kažem: Sin ne može ništa činiti sam od sebe nego šta vidi da Otac čini; jer šta On čini ono i Sin čini onako;
22 Jer Otac ne sudi nikome, nego sav sud dade Sinu,
22 Porque el Padre á nadie juzga, mas todo el juicio dió al Hijo;
26 Jer kao što Otac ima život u sebi, tako dade i Sinu da ima život u sebi;
28 No os maravilléis de esto; porque vendrá hora, cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz;
33 Vi poslaste k Jovanu, i posvedoči vam za istinu;
35 On beše videlo koje goraše i svetljaše, a vi se hteste malo vremena radovati njegovom svetljenju.
37 I Otac koji me posla sam svedoči za mene.
40 I nećete da dođete k meni da imate život.
43 Ja dođoh u ime Oca svog i ne primate me; ako drugi dođe u ime svoje, njega ćete primiti.
47 A kad njegovim pismima ne verujete kako ćete verovati mojim rečima?
47 Y si á sus escritos no creéis, ¿cómo creeréis á mis palabras?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 5:2 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXIV)

    The lesson of the Gospel has just sounded in our ears, and made us intent to know what is the meaning of what has been read. This, I suppose, is looked for from me, this I promise, by the Lord's assistance, to explain as well as I can.

  2. Commentary 5:19 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter V — 19)

    John the evangelist, among his fellows and companions the other evangelists, received this special and peculiar gift from the Lord (on whose breast he reclined at the feast, hereby to signify that he was drinking deeper secrets from His inmost heart), to utter those things concerning the Son of God which may perhaps rouse the attentive minds of the little …

  3. Commentary 5:6 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily XXXVII)

    Great is the profit of the divine Scriptures, and all-sufficient is the aid which comes from them. And Paul declared this when he said, "Whatsoever things were written aforetime, were written aforetime for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." But they cannot maintain this; otherwise their primary and original Ogdoad will be included in the number of Æons who suffered together. Moreover, there was also a certain other person healed by the Lord, after he had suffered for eight-and-thirty years: they ought therefore to affirm that the Æon who occupies the thirty-eighth place suffered.
