1 Unto the end, for them that shall be changed, for the inscription of a title, to David himself, for doctrine,
·
2 When he set fire to Mesopotamia of Syria and Sobal and Joab returned and slew of Edom, in the vale of the saltpits, twelve thousand men.
·
3 O God, thou hast cast us off, and hast destroyed us; thou hast been angry, and hast had mercy on us.
60:1 For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A teaching poem by David, when he fought with Aram Naharaim and with Aram Zobah, and Joab returned, and killed twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt. God, you have rejected us. You have broken us down. You have been angry. Restore us, again.
4 Thou hast moved the earth, and hast troubled it: heal thou the breaches thereof, for it has been moved.
60:2 You have made the land tremble. You have torn it. Mend its fractures, for it quakes.
5 Thou hast shewn thy people hard things; thou hast made us drink wine of sorrow.
60:3 You have shown your people hard things. You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger.
6 Thou hast given a warning to them that fear thee: that they may flee from before the bow: That thy beloved may be delivered.
60:4 You have given a banner to those who fear you, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
7 Save me with thy right hand, and hear me.
60:5 So that your beloved may be delivered, save with your right hand, and answer us.
8 God hath spoken in his holy place: I will rejoice, and I will divide Sichem; and will mete out the vale of tabernacles.
60:6 God has spoken from his sanctuary: “I will triumph. I will divide Shechem, and measure out the valley of Succoth.
9 Galaad is mine, and Manasses is mine: and Ephraim is the strength of my head. Juda is my king:
60:7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine. Ephraim also is the defense of my head. Judah is my scepter.
10 Moab is the pot of my hope. Into Edom will I stretch out my shoe: to me the foreigners are made subject.
60:8 Moab is my wash basin. I will throw my sandal on Edom. I shout in triumph over Philistia.”
11 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?
60:9 Who will bring me into the strong city? Who has led me to Edom?
12 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go out with our armies?
60:10 Haven’t you, God, rejected us? You don’t go out with our armies, God.
13 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the salvation of man.
60:11 Give us help against the adversary, for the help of man is vain.
14 Through God we shall do mightily: and he shall bring to nothing them that afflict us.
60:12 Through God we will do valiantly, for it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 60.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LIX)

As the Scripture is wont to set mysteries of the Psalms on the titles, and to deck the brow of a Psalm with the high announcement of a Mystery, in order that we that are about to go in may know (when as it were upon the door-post we have read what within is doing) either of whom the house …

But first passeth away the tribulation of this life, out of which He giveth us help, to whom we have said, "Give us help from tribulation." And all this life is indeed a tribulation to the understanding.
