WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon) PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition) 1 This letter comes from Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who share with us the same priceless trust in our God and Savior Jesus Christ, the one who is truly good and right. 1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
2 May you have ever more grace and peace as you grow in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 2 Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
3 Through his divine power we have been given everything that's important to live a God-centered life. This comes through knowing him who called us to himself by his own glory and goodness. In this way he's given us wonderful, priceless promises. 3 seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue,
4 Through these promises you can share in the divine nature, being rid of the corruption caused by this world's evil desires. 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.
5 For this same reason, do everything you can! Add to your trust in God, goodness; add to goodness, knowledge; 5 Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge;
6 add to knowledge, self-control; add to self-control, patience; add to patience, reverence; 6 and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control, perseverance; and in perseverance, godliness;
7 add to reverence, affection for fellow-believers, add to affection for fellow-believers, love. 7 and in godliness, brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love.
8 The more you have these qualities, the more they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to not be idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For anyone who doesn't have such qualities is short-sighted, or blind. They forget that they've been cleansed from their past sins. 9 For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.
10 So, brothers and sisters, be all the more determined to make sure you are truly “called and chosen.” If you do this, you won't ever fall. 10 Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.
11 You will receive a tremendous welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 11 For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
12 That's why I always remind you about these things, even though you know them already, and you stand firm in the truth that you possess. 12 Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the present truth.
13 But I still think it's a good idea to encourage you by giving you reminders while I live. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you,
14 I know the time when I shall leave this life will be coming soon— our Lord Jesus Christ has made this clear to me. 14 knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
15 I will do my best so that when I'm gone you will always be able to remember these things. 15 Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.
16 We didn't follow made-up myths when we told you about the coming in power of our Lord Jesus Christ—we saw his majesty for ourselves. 16 For we didn’t follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice of majestic glory spoke to him and announced, “This is my Son, the one I love, and who truly pleases me.” 17 For he received from God the Father honor and glory when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
18 We ourselves heard this voice speak from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. 18 We heard this voice come out of heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.
19 We also have the confirming word of prophecy that's absolutely trustworthy, and you will benefit from paying close attention to it. It's like a lamp that shines in a dark place until the day dawns, and the morning star shines to illuminate your minds. 19 We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts,
20 Most of all you should realize that no prophecy of scripture is a matter for interpretation based on the whims of an individual, 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation.
21 for no prophecy originated in human ideas, but prophets spoke for God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 21 For no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
