WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 For the music director. A psalm (maskil) of David, concerning the time when Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the home of Ahimelech.” You great man, why do you boast about the evil things you've done? God's trustworthy love lasts all day long.
1 For the Chief Musician. A contemplation by David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, “David has come to Ahimelech’s house.” Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man? God’s loving kindness endures continually.
2 You plot to make people suffer; your words cut like a sharp razor, you liar!
2 Agravios maquina tu lengua: como navaja amolada hace engaño.
2 Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
3 You love evil more than good, and telling lies more than speaking the truth. Selah.
(Selah.)
3 You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking the truth. Selah.
4 You love slanderous words that destroy others, you liar!
4 Has amado toda suerte de palabras perniciosas, engañosa lengua.
4 You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue.
5 But God will strike you down so hard you'll never get up. He will grab hold of you and drag you from your tent. He will tear you out of the land of the living. Selah.
(Selah.)
5 God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.
6 Those who do right will see all this. They will be astonished and laugh, saying,
6 The righteous also will see it, and fear, and laugh at him, saying,
7 “See what happens to those who don't go to God for help but instead rely on their great wealth and strength—which only brings their destruction!”
7 “Behold, this is the man who didn’t make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.”
8 But I'm like an olive tree growing strongly in God's house. I trust in God's unfailing love forever and ever.
8 But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God’s house. I trust in God’s loving kindness forever and ever.
9 I will praise you forever, God, for all you have done. In the presence of your trustworthy people, I will place my hope in the kind of person you are, for you are good.
9 I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it. I will hope in your name, for it is good, in the presence of your saints.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

Neither must this multitude's throng be defrauded, nor their infirmity burthened. Silence we ask, and quiet, in order that our voice, after yesterday's labour, be able with some little vigour to last out.

For he prefigures that society of men which says, "But I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God: I have trusted in the mercy of God." But let him not seek the empty honors of a famous name upon earth, for "Blessed is the man that maketh the name of the Lord his trust, and respecteth not …
