WEB World English Bible (Classic, with Deuterocanon)
1 A psalm of Asaph. God stands in the midst of his great assembly to judge among the gods.
1 A Psalm by Asaph. God presides in the great assembly. He judges among the gods.
2 How long will you make unfair judgments and show favoritism to the wicked? Selah.
2 “How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?” Selah.
3 Defend the poor and orphans; support the rights of those who are oppressed and suffering.
3 “Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
4 Rescue the poor and those unable to help themselves; save them from the clutches of evil people.
4 Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.”
5 They don't have any wisdom; they live in the dark; the foundations of the earth are shaken.
5 They don’t know, neither do they understand. They walk back and forth in darkness. All the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I say, “You are gods; all of you are children of the Most High.
6 I said, “You are gods, all of you are sons of the Most High.
7 But you will die like any human being, you will fall like any other leader.”
7 Nevertheless you shall die like men, and fall like one of the rulers.”
8 Stand up, Lord, and judge the earth, for all the nations belong to you.
8 Arise, God, judge the earth, for you inherit all of the nations.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm LXXXI)

No such thing did ye hear in this when it was reading. Therefore take the presses for the mystery of the Church, which is now transacting. In the presses we observe three things, pressure, and of the pressure two things, one to be laid up, the other to be thrown away.

And again: "God stood in the congregation of the gods, He judges among the gods." He [here] refers to the Father and the Son, and those who have received the adoption; but these are the Church.

  3. Quotes verse 82:6 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book IX, Chapter 23)

… it from us to say that "great King above all gods" means "great King above all demons." But the same Scripture also calls men who belong to God's people "gods:" "I have said, Ye are gods, and all of you children of the Most High." Accordingly, when God is styled God of gods, this may be understood of these gods; …
