1 And we ask you, brothers, in regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of our gathering together to Him, 2 that you are not quickly shaken in mind, nor be troubled, neither through spirit, neither through word, neither through letters as through us, as that the Day of the LORD has arrived; 3 do not let anyone deceive you in any way, because if the departure may not come first, the man of lawlessness may [not] be revealed—the son of destruction, 4 who is opposing and is raising himself up above all called god or worshiped, so as for him to have sat down in the temple of God, proclaiming that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that, yet being with you, I said these things to you? 6 And now, you have known what is restraining, for his being revealed in his own time, 7 for the secret of lawlessness already works, only the [One] now restraining [will do so] until He may come out of [the] midst, 8 and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the LORD will consume with the Spirit of His mouth, and will nullify at the appearance of His coming, 9 whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power, and signs, and lying wonders, 10 and in all deceitfulness of the unrighteousness in those perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth for their being saved, 11 and because of this God will send to them a working of delusion, for their believing the lie, 12 that they may be judged—all who did not believe the truth, but were well pleased in the unrighteousness. 13 And we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brothers, beloved by the LORD, that God chose you from the beginning to salvation, in sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth, 14 to which He called you through our good news, to the acquiring of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ; 15 so, then, brothers, stand fast, and hold the traditions that you were taught, whether through word, whether through our letter; 16 and may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who loved us, and gave continuous comfort, and good hope in grace, 17 comfort your hearts, and establish you in every good word and work.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 2:6 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Second Thessalonians (Homily IV)

One may naturally enquire, what is that which withholdeth, and after that would know, why Paul expresses it so obscurely. What then is it that withholdeth, that is, hindereth him from being revealed? Some indeed say, the grace of the Spirit, but others the Roman empire, to whom I most of all accede. Wherefore?

  2. Quotes verse 2:4 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter VI)

And again, speaking of Antichrist, he says, "who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped." He points out here those who are called gods, by such as know not God, that is, idols.

  3. Quotes verse 2:8 Augustine of Hippo, The City of God (Book XX, Chapters 10–13)

… fire coming down out of heaven and consuming them, John meant that blow wherewith Christ in His coming is to strike those persecutors of the Church whom He shall then find alive upon earth, when He shall kill Antichrist with the breath of His mouth, then even this is not the last judgment of the wicked; but the last judgment …

  4. Quotes verse 2:9 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXXVI)

Having called him "man of sin," and "son of perdition," He added, "Whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders; and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish." And see how He secures them; "Go not forth into the deserts, enter not into the secret chambers." He did not say, …

  5. Quotes verse 2:15 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture V)

And just as the mustard seed in one small grain contains many branches, so also this Faith has embraced in few words all the knowledge of godliness in the Old and New Testaments. Take heed then, brethren, and hold fast the traditions which ye now receive, and write them an the table of your heart.
