2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because now three days they continue with Me, and they have not what they may eat; 2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three days and have nothing to eat.
3 and if I will let them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way, for certain of them are come from far.” 3 If I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way.”
4 And His disciples answered Him, “From where will anyone be able to feed these here in a wilderness with bread?” 4 His disciples answered him, “From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?”
4 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπ᾽ ἐρημίας;
5 And He was questioning them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” 5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”
6 And He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and having taken the seven loaves, having given thanks, He broke, and was giving to His disciples that they may set before [them]; and they set before the multitude. 6 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.
7 And they had a few small fishes, and having blessed, He said to set them also before [them]; 7 They also had a few small fish. Having blessed them, he said to serve these also.
8 and they ate and were filled, and they took up that which was over of broken pieces—seven baskets; 8 They ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
9 and those eating were about four thousand. And He let them away, 9 Those who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.
10 and immediately having entered into the boat with His disciples, He came to the parts of Dalmanutha, 10 Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha.
11 and the Pharisees came forth, and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from Heaven, tempting Him; 11 The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven and testing him.
12 and having sighed deeply in His spirit, He says, “Why does this generation seek after a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 12 He sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
13 And having left them, having entered again into the boat, He went away to the other side; 13 He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.
14 and they forgot to take loaves, and except one loaf they had nothing with them in the boat, 14 They forgot to take bread; and they didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
15 and He was charging them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod,” 15 He warned them, saying, “Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”
16 and they were reasoning with one another, saying, “Because we have no loaves.” 16 They reasoned with one another, saying, “It’s because we have no bread.”
17 And Jesus having known, says to them, “Why do you reason, because you have no loaves? Do you not yet perceive, nor understand, yet have you hardened your heart? 17 Jesus, perceiving it, said to them, “Why do you reason that it’s because you have no bread? Don’t you perceive yet or understand? Is your heart still hardened?
17 καὶ γνοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς· τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε; οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε; ἔτι πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν;
18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 18 Having eyes, don’t you see? Having ears, don’t you hear? Don’t you remember?
18 ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε, καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε; καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε;
19 When I broke the five loaves to the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They say to Him, “Twelve.” 19 When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Twelve.”
20 “And when the seven to the four thousand, how many hand-baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said, “Seven.” 20 “When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Seven.”
21 And He said to them, “How do you not understand?” 21 He asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”
21 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· οὔπω συνίετε;
22 And He comes to Bethsaida, and they bring to Him one blind, and call on Him that He may touch him, 22 He came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.
23 and having taken the hand of the blind man, He led him forth outside the village, and having spit on his eyes, having put [His] hands on him, He was questioning him if he beholds anything: 23 He took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village. When he had spat on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.
24 and he, having looked up, said, “I behold men, as I see trees, walking.” 24 He looked up, and said, “I see men, but I see them like walking trees.”
25 Afterward again He put [His] hands on his eyes, and made him look up, and he was restored, and discerned all things clearly, 25 Then again he laid his hands on his eyes. He looked intently, and was restored, and saw everyone clearly.
26 and He sent him away to his house, saying, “Neither may you go into the village, nor tell [it] to any in the village.” 26 He sent him away to his house, saying, “Don’t enter into the village, nor tell anyone in the village.”
27 And Jesus went forth, and His disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and in the way He was questioning His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say I am?” 27 Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”
27 Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰς κώμας Καισαρείας τῆς Φιλίππου· καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐπηρώτα τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγων αὐτοῖς· τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι;
28 And they answered, “John the Immerser, and others Elijah, but others one of the prophets.” 28 They told him, “John the Baptizer, and others say Elijah, but others, one of the prophets.”
29 And He says to them, “And you—who do you say I am?” And Peter answering says to him, “You are the Christ.” 29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
30 And He strictly charged them that they may tell no one about it, 30 He commanded them that they should tell no one about him.
31 and began to teach them that it is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to rise again after three days; 31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 and openly He was speaking the word. And Peter having taken Him aside, began to rebuke Him, 32 He spoke to them openly. Peter took him and began to rebuke him.
33 and He, having turned, and having looked on His disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you do not mind the things of God, but the things of men.” 33 But he, turning around and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men.”
34 And having called near the multitude, with His disciples, He said to them, “Whoever wills to come after Me—let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me; 34 He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 for whoever may will to save his life will lose it; and whoever may lose his life for My sake and for the good news’ sake, he will save it; 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.
36 for what will it profit a man, if he may gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
36 τί γὰρ ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον, καὶ ζημιωθῇ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ;
37 Or what will a man give as an exchange for his life? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his life?
37 ἢ τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ;
38 For whoever may be ashamed of Me, and of My words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He may come in the glory of His Father with the holy messengers.” 38 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
