1 Od Pavla voljom Božijom pozvanog apostola Isusa Hrista, i od Sostena brata,
3 Blagodat vam i mir od Boga Oca našeg i Gospoda Isusa Hrista.
4 Gracias doy á mi Dios siempre por vosotros, por la gracia de Dios que os es dada en Cristo Jesús;
5 Que en todas las cosas sois enriquecidos en él, en toda lengua y en toda ciencia;
6 kao što se svedočanstvo Hristovo utvrdi među vama;
11 Porque me ha sido declarado de vosotros, hermanos míos, por los [que son] de Cloé, que hay entre vosotros contiendas;
12 a to kažem da jedan od vas govori: Ja sam Pavlov; a drugi: Ja sam Apolov; a treći: Ja sam Kifin; a četvrti: Ja sam Hristov.
14 Hvala Bogu što ja nijednog od vas ne krstih osim Krispa i Gaja;
14 Doy gracias á Dios, que á ninguno de vosotros he bautizado, sino á Crispo y á Gayo;
16 A krstih i Stefanin dom: dalje ne znam jesam li koga drugog krstio.
19 Jer je pisano: Pogubiću premudrost premudrih, i razum razumnih odbaciću.
22 Jer i Jevreji znake ištu, i Grci premudrosti traže.
23 A mi propovedamo Hrista razapetog, Jevrejima, dakle, sablazan a Grcima bezumlje;
23 Mas nosotros predicamos á Cristo crucificado, á los Judíos ciertamente tropezadero, y á los Gentiles locura;
26 Jer pogledajte znanje svoje, braćo, da nema ni mnogo premudrih po telu, ni mnogo silnih ni mnogo plemenitih;
26 Porque mirad, hermanos, vuestra vocación, que no sois muchos sabios según la carne, no muchos poderosos, no muchos nobles;
27 nego što je ludo pred svetom ono izabra Bog da posrami premudre; i što je slabo pred svetom ono izabra Bog da posrami jako;
27 Antes lo necio del mundo escogió Dios, para avergonzar á los sabios; y lo flaco del mundo escogió Dios, para avergonzar lo fuerte;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 1:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Corinthians (Homily I)

    See how immediately, from the very beginning, he casts down their pride, and dashes to the ground all their fond imagination, in that he speaks of himself as "called." For what I have learnt, saith he, I discovered not myself, nor acquired by my own wisdom, but while I was persecuting and laying waste the Church I was called.

    Moreover, they affirm that the Apostle Paul himself made mention of this cross in the following words: "The doctrine of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, but to us who are saved it is the power of God." And again: "God forbid that I should glory in anything save in the cross of Christ, by whom the world …
