3 Jer umreste, i vaš je život sakriven s Hristom u Bogu.
5 Pomorite dakle ude svoje koji su na zemlji: kurvarstvo, nečistotu, slast, zlu želju i lakomstvo, koje je idolopoklonstvo;
6 za koje ide gnev Božji na sinove protivljenja;
7 u kojima i vi nekada hođaste kad živeste među njima.
8 A sad odbacite i vi to sve: gnev, ljutinu, pakost, huljenje, sramotne reči iz usta svojih.
10 Y revestídoos del nuevo, el cual por el conocimiento es renovado conforme á la imagen del que lo crió;
12 Vestíos pues, como escogidos de Dios, santos y amados, de entrañas de misericordia, de benignidad, de humildad, de mansedumbre, de tolerancia;
17 I sve šta god činite rečju ili delom, sve činite u ime Gospoda Isusa Hrista hvaleći Boga i Oca kroza Nj.
19 Maridos, amad á vuestras mujeres, y no seáis desapacibles con ellas.
20 Deco!
23 Y todo lo que hagáis, hacedlo de ánimo, como al Señor, y no á los hombres;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 3:5 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Colossians (Homily VIII)

    I know that many are offended by the foregoing discourse, but what can I do? ye heard what the Master enjoined. Am I to blame? what shall I do? See ye not the creditors, when debtors are obstinate, how they wear collars? Heard ye what Paul proclaimed today?

  2. Quotes verse 3:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book V, Preface)

    … of the flesh, and receiving the Holy Spirit; as the apostle says in the Epistle to the Colossians: "Mortify, therefore, your members which are upon the earth." And what these are he himself explains: "Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence; and covetousness, which is idolatry." The laying aside of these is what the apostle preaches; and he declares that those …

    But so soon as I understood, withal, that man made "after the image of Him that created him" was not so understood by Thy spiritual sons (whom of the Catholic mother Thou hadst begotten again through grace), as though they believed and imagined Thee to be bounded by human form,--although what was the nature of a spiritual substance I had …
