2 Blagodat vam i mir od Boga Oca našeg i Gospoda Isusa Hrista.
3 Blagosloven Bog i Otac Gospoda našeg Isusa Hrista, koji nas je blagoslovio svakim blagoslovom duhovnim na nebesima kroz Hrista;
4 Según nos escogió en él antes de la fundación del mundo, para que fuésemos santos y sin mancha delante de él en amor;
7 u kome imamo izbavljenje krvlju Njegovom, i oproštenje greha, po bogatstvu blagodati Njegove,
8 koju je preumnožio u nama u svakoj premudrosti i razumu,
8 Que sobreabundó en nosotros en toda sabiduría é inteligencia;
9 pokazavši nam tajnu volje svoje, po ugodnosti svojoj koju napred pokaza u Njemu,
13 kroz kog i vi, čuvši reč istine, jevanđelje spasenja svog, u kome i verovavši zapečatiste se Svetim Duhom obećanja,
15 Zato i ja čuvši vašu veru u Hrista Isusa, i ljubav k svima svetima,
16 No ceso de dar gracias por vosotros, haciendo memoria de vosotros en mis oraciones;
17 da Bog Gospoda našeg Isusa Hrista, Otac slave, dade vam Duha premudrosti i otkrivenja da Ga poznate,
17 Que el Dios del Señor nuestro Jesucristo, el Padre de gloria, os dé espíritu de sabiduría y de revelación para su conocimiento;

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:10 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book I, Chapters III–IV)

    … that Paul said, "And He Himself is all things;" and again, "All things are to Him, and of Him are all things;" and further, "In Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead;" and yet again, "All things are gathered together by God in Christ." Thus do they interpret these and any like passages to be found in Scripture.

  2. Quotes verse 1:20 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book IX)

    And Thou, O Lord, hadst already magnified Thy Holy One, raising Him from the dead, and setting Him at Thy right hand, whence from on high He should send His promise, the Paraclete, "the Spirit of Truth." And He had already sent Him, but I knew it not; He had sent Him, because He was now magnified, rising again from …

    And an indication of this is found in the fact that wherever the Natures are distinguished in our thoughts from one another, the Names are also distinguished; as you hear in Paul's words, "The God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory." The God of Christ, but the Father of glory.

  5. Quotes verse 1:22 Basil of Caesarea, On the Holy Spirit (Chapter V)

    … body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered increaseth with the increase of God." And that Christ is the head of the Church we have learned in another passage, when the apostle says "gave him to be the head over all things to the Church," and "of his fulness have all we received." And the Lord Himself says "He shall …
