2 kog postavi naslednika svemu, kroz kog i svet stvori.
4 i toliko bolji posta od anđela koliko preslavnije ime od njihova dobi.
I opet: Ja ću Mu biti Otac, i On će mi biti Sin.
7 Tako i anđelima govori: Koji čini anđele svoje duhove, i sluge svoje plamen ognjeni.
8 A sinu: Presto je Tvoj, Bože, va vek veka; palica je pravde palica carstva Tvog.
8 Mas al hijo: Tu trono, oh Dios, por el siglo del siglo; vara de equidad la vara de tu reino;
10 I opet: Ti si, Gospode, u početku osnovao zemlju, i nebesa su dela ruku Tvojih:
11 Ona će proći, a Ti ostaješ: i sva će ostareti kao haljina,
11 Ellos perecerán, mas tú eres permanente; y todos ellos se envejecerán como una vestidura;
13 A kome od anđela reče kad: Sedi meni s desne strane dok položim neprijatelje Tvoje podnožje nogama Tvojim?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 1:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on Hebrews (Homily I)

    Truly, "where sin abounded, grace did much more abound." ( Rom. v. 20.) This at least the blessed Paul intimates here also, in the very beginning of his Epistle to the Hebrews.

    … knowledge, "who, being the brightness of His majesty, is by so much greater than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they." For it is thus written, "Who maketh His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire." But concerning His Son the Lord spoke thus: "Thou art my Son, to-day have I …

  3. Quotes verse 1:1 Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CVIII)

    Since, "in many places, and in diverse manners," as the Epistle to the Hebrews saith, "God spoke in former times to the fathers through the Prophets;" yet He spoke of Him whom He sent afterwards, that the words of the Prophets might be fulfilled: for "all the promises of God in Him are yea." Psalm CIX

  4. Quotes verse 1:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXV)

    At least Paul puts it as a peculiar privilege of the Only-Begotten, saying, "To which of the angels said He at any time, Sit thou on my right hand? And of the angels He saith, who maketh His angels spirits; but unto the Son, Thy throne, O God.'" How then saith He, "To sit on my right hand and on …
