1 “My soul is weary of my life. I will give free course to my complaint. I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
2 Reći ću Bogu: Nemoj me osuditi; kaži mi zašto se preš sa mnom.
2 Diré á Dios: no me condenes; hazme entender por qué pleiteas conmigo.
2 I will tell God, ‘Do not condemn me. Show me why you contend with me.
3 Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked?
4 Jesu li u Tebe oči telesne? Vidiš li kao što vidi čovek?
4 ¿Tienes tú ojos de carne? ¿ves tú como ve el hombre?
4 Do you have eyes of flesh? Or do you see as man sees?
5 Jesu li dani tvoji kao dani čovečiji, i godine tvoje kao vek ljudski,
5 Are your days as the days of mortals, or your years as man’s years,
6 that you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin?
7 Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.
8 Tvoje su me ruke stvorile i načinile, i Ti me odsvuda potireš.
8 “‘Your hands have framed me and fashioned me altogether, yet you destroy me.
9 Opomeni se da si me kao od kala načinio, i opet ćeš me u prah obratiti.
9 Remember, I beg you, that you have fashioned me as clay. Will you bring me into dust again?
10 Nisi li me kao mleko slio i kao sir usirio me?
10 Haven’t you poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?
11 Navukao si na me kožu i meso, i kostima i žilama spleo si me.
11 Vestísteme de piel y carne, y cubrísteme de huesos y nervios.
11 You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews.
12 Životom i milošću darivao si me; i staranje Tvoje čuvalo je duh moj.
12 Vida y misericordia me concediste, y tu visitación guardó mi espíritu.
12 You have granted me life and loving kindness. Your visitation has preserved my spirit.
13 Yet you hid these things in your heart. I know that this is with you:
14 Ako sam zgrešio, opazio si me, i nisi me oprostio bezakonja mog.
14 Si pequé, tú me has observado, y no me limpias de mi iniquidad.
14 if I sin, then you mark me. You will not acquit me from my iniquity.
15 Ako sam skrivio, teško meni! Ako li sam prav, ne mogu podignuti glave, pun sramote i videći muku svoju.
15 If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still will not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction.
16 If my head is held high, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me.
17 Ponavljaš svedočanstva svoja protiv mene, i umnožavaš gnev svoj na me; vojske jedne za drugom izlaze na me.
17 You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me. Changes and warfare are with me.
18 Zašto si me izvadio iz utrobe? O da umreh! Da me ni oko ne vide!
18 ¿Por qué me sacaste de la matriz? Habría yo espirado, y no me vieran ojos.
18 “‘Why, then, have you brought me out of the womb? I wish I had given up the spirit, and no eye had seen me.
19 I should have been as though I had not been. I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.
20 Nije li malo dana mojih?
20 Aren’t my days few? Stop! Leave me alone, that I may find a little comfort,
21 Pre nego otidem odakle se neću vratiti, u zemlju tamnu i u sen smrtni,
21 Antes que vaya para no volver, á la tierra de tinieblas y de sombra de muerte;
21 before I go where I will not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death;
22 the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order, where the light is as midnight.’”

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 10:11 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture IX)

Who knitted us with sinews and bones, and clothed us with skin and flesh, and, as soon as the child was born, brought streams of milk out of the breasts?
