1 Ovo govori Isus, pa podiže oči svoje na nebo i reče: Oče! Dođe čas, proslavi Sina svog, da i Sin Tvoj proslavi Tebe;
1 ESTAS cosas habló Jesús, y levantados los ojos al cielo, dijo: Padre, la hora es llegada; glorifica á tu Hijo, para que también tu Hijo te glorifique á ti;
3 A ovo je život večni da poznaju Tebe jedinog istinitog Boga, i koga si poslao Isusa Hrista.
4 Yo te he glorificado en la tierra: he acabado la obra que me diste que hiciese.
5 I sad proslavi Ti mene, Oče, u Tebe samog slavom koju imadoh u Tebe pre nego svet postade.
7 Ahora han conocido que todas las cosas que me diste, son de ti;
17 Osveti ih istinom svojom: reč je Tvoja istina.
20 Ne molim se, pak, samo za njih, nego i za one koji me uzveruju njihove reči radi;
21 da svi jedno budu, kao Ti, Oče, što si u meni i ja u Tebi; da i oni u nama jedno budu, da i svet veruje da si me Ti poslao.
Svet Tebe ne pozna, a ja Te poznah, i ovi poznaše da si me Ti poslao.
25 Padre justo, el mundo no te ha conocido, mas yo te he conocido; y éstos han conocido que tú me enviaste;
26 I pokazah im ime Tvoje, i pokazaću: da ljubav kojom si mene ljubio u njima bude, i ja u njima.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 17:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XVII — 1)

    Before these words, which we are now, with the Lord's help, to make the subject of discourse, Jesus had said, "These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace;" which we are to consider as referring, not to the later words uttered by Him immediately before, but to all that He had addressed to them, …

  2. Commentary 17:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXXX)

    "He that hath done and taught," it saith, "the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of heaven." And with much reason; for to show true wisdom in words, is easy, but the proof which is by works is the part of some noble and great one.

  3. Quotes verse 17:5 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book IV, Chapter IX)

    … alone antecedently to Adam, but also before all creation, the Word glorified His Father, remaining in Him; and was Himself glorified by the Father, as He did Himself declare, "Father, glorify Thou Me with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was." Nor did He stand in need of our service when He ordered us to follow …

  4. Quotes verse 17:3 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXVII)

    This is life eternal; this Himself hath said, "But this is life eternal, that they may know Thee the Only True God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." This is life eternal, that they may know, see, comprehend, acquaint themselves with what they had believed, may perceive that which they were not yet able to comprehend.

  5. Quotes verse 17:23 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XXXII)

    … men know that ye are my disciples," not "if ye cast out devils," but "if ye have love one to another." And again, "Hereby shall all men know that Thou hast sent me;" not "if these men raise the dead," but, "if they be one." For, as to miracles, they oftentimes, while they profited another, have injured him who had …
