1 I rekavši ovo Isus iziđe s učenicima svojim preko potoka Kedrona gde beše vrt, u koji uđe On i učenici Njegovi.
A s njima stajaše i Juda koji Ga izdavaše.
5 Respondiéronle: A Jesús Nazareno.
6 A kad im reče: Ja sam; izmakoše se natrag i popadaše na zemlju.
7 Onda ih opet zapita Isus: Koga tražite? A oni rekoše: Isusa Nazarećanina.
7 Volvióles, pues, á preguntar: ¿A quién buscáis? Y ellos dijeron: A Jesús Nazareno.
8 Isus im odgovori: Kazah vam da sam ja. Ako dakle mene tražite, ostavite ove nek idu.
8 Respondió Jesús: Os he dicho que yo soy: pues si á mí buscáis, dejad ir á éstos.
10 A Simon Petar imaše nož, pa ga izvadi i udari slugu poglavara svešteničkog, i odseče mu desno uho. A sluzi beše ime Malho.
12 A četa i vojvoda i momci jevrejski uhvatiše Isusa i svezaše Ga,
13 i odvedoše Ga najpre Ani, jer beše tast Kajafi, koji beše poglavar sveštenički one godine.
15 Za Isusom, pak, iđaše Simon Petar i drugi učenik; a učenik onaj beše poznat kod poglavara svešteničkog, i uđe s Isusom u dvor poglavara svešteničkog;
15 Y seguía á Jesús Simón Pedro, y otro discípulo. Y aquel discípulo era conocido del pontífice, y entró con Jesús al atrio del pontífice;
17 Onda reče sluškinja vratarica Petru: Da nisi i ti učenik ovog čoveka? On reče: Nisam.
Dice él: No soy.
19 Poglavar, pak, sveštenički zapita Isusa za učenike Njegove i za Njegovu nauku.
21 ¿Qué me preguntas á mí? Pregunta á los que han oído, qué les haya yo hablado: he aquí, ésos saben lo que yo he dicho.
23 Isus mu odgovori: Ako zlo rekoh, dokaži da je zlo; ako li dobro, zašto me biješ?
24 I Ana posla Ga svezanog Kajafi, poglavaru svešteničkom.
24 Y Anás le había enviado atado á Caifás pontífice.
25 A Simon Petar stajaše i grejaše se. Onda mu rekoše: Da nisi i ti od učenika njegovih? A on se odreče i reče: Nisam.
29 Onda Pilat izađe k njima napolje i reče: Kakvu krivicu iznosite na ovog čoveka?
30 Respondieron y dijéronle: Si éste no fuera malhechor, no te le habríamos entregado.
31 A Pilat im reče: Uzmite ga vi i po zakonu svom sudite mu. A Jevreji mu rekoše: Mi ne smemo nikoga pogubiti.
33 Onda uđe Pilat opet u sudnicu, i dozva Isusa, i reče Mu: Ti si car judejski?
37 Onda Mu reče Pilat: Dakle si ti car?
A Varava beše hajduk.
40 Entonces todos dieron voces otra vez, diciendo: No á éste, sino á Barrabás. Y Barrabás era ladrón.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 18:1 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter XVIII — 1-12)

When the grand and lengthened discourse was concluded which the Lord delivered after supper, and on the eve of shedding His blood for us, to the disciples who were then with Him, and had added the prayer addressed to His Father, the evangelist John began thereafter the narrative of His passion in these words: "When Jesus had so spoken, He …

  2. Commentary 18:1 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LXXXIII)

An awful thing is death, and very full of terror, but not to those who have learnt the true wisdom which is above. For he that knows nothing certain concerning things to come, but deems it to be a certain dissolution and end of life, with reason shudders and is afraid, as though he were passing into non-existence.

… the precepts which He taught, did not offer the other cheek to the servant of the high priest when smiting Him thereon; but, so far from that, said, "If I have spoken evil, hear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me?" Yet was He not on that account unprepared in heart, for the salvation of all, …

  4. Quotes verse 18:15 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily LXV)

For, because both continued with Him at His crucifixion, taking away the ground of his own commendation, he saith, "That disciple was known unto the high priest." But James survived not a long time, but from the beginning he was so greatly filled with warmth, and so forsook all the things of men, and mounted up to an height unutterable, …
