PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1◆ A Isus otide na goru maslinsku.
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2◆ A ujutru opet dođe u crkvu, i sav narod iđaše k Njemu; i sedavši učaše ih.
2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them.
3◆ A književnici i fariseji dovedoše k Njemu ženu uhvaćenu u preljubi, i postavivši je na sredu
3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle,
4◆ rekoše Mu: Učitelju! Ova je žena uhvaćena sad u preljubi;
4 they told him, “Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.
5◆ a Mojsije nam u zakonu zapovedi da takve kamenjem ubijamo; a ti šta veliš?
5 Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What then do you say about her?”
6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
7◆ A kad Ga jednako pitahu, ispravi se i reče im: Koji je među vama bez greha neka najpre baci kamen na nju.
7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.”
8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
9◆ A kad oni to čuše, i pokarani budući od svoje savesti izlažahu jedan za drugim počevši od starešina do poslednjih; i osta Isus sam i žena stojeći na sredi.
9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.
10◆ A kad se Isus ispravi, i ne videvši ni jednog do samu ženu, reče joj: Ženo! Gde su oni što te tužahu? Nijedan te ne osudi?
10 Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?”
10 ἀνακύψας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ· γύναι, ποῦ εἰσιν; οὐδείς σε κατέκρινεν;
11◆ A ona reče: Nijedan, Gospode!
11 She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”
12 Isus im, pak, opet reče: Ja sam videlo svetu: ko ide za mnom neće hoditi po tami, nego će imati videlo života.
12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 Tada Mu rekoše fariseji: Ti sam za sebe svedočiš: svedočanstvo tvoje nije istinito.
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
14 Isus odgovori i reče im: Ako ja svedočim sam za sebe istinito je svedočanstvo moje: jer znam otkuda dođoh i kuda idem; a vi ne znate otkuda dolazim i kuda idem.
14 Jesus answered them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going.
15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.
16 I ako sudim ja, sud je moj prav: jer nisam sam, nego ja i Otac koji me posla.
16 Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.
17 It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.
18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 Tada Mu govorahu: Gde je otac tvoj? Isus odgovori: Ni mene znate ni Oca mog; kad biste znali mene, znali biste i Oca mog.
19 They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 A Isus im opet reče: Ja idem, i tražićete me; i pomrećete u svom grehu; kud ja idem vi ne možete doći.
21 Jesus said therefore again to them, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can’t come.”
22 The Jews therefore said, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come’?”
22 ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτόν, ὅτι λέγει, ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;
23 I reče im: Vi ste od nižih, ja sam od viših; vi ste od ovog sveta, ja nisam od ovog sveta.
23 He said to them, “You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”
25 Tada Mu govorahu: Ko si ti? I reče im Isus: Početak, kako vam i kažem.
25 They said therefore to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However, he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world.”
27 They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father.
28 A Isus im reče: Kad podignete Sina čovečijeg, onda ćete doznati da sam ja, i da ništa sam od sebe ne činim; nego kako me nauči Otac moj onako govorim.
28 Jesus therefore said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.
29 He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
30 Kad ovo govoraše, mnogi Ga verovaše.
30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him.
31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.
32 i poznaćete istinu, i istina će vas izbaviti.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
33 Odgovoriše i rekoše Mu: Mi smo seme Avraamovo, i nikome nismo robovali nikad; kako ti govoriš da ćemo se izbaviti?
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?”
33 ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ· σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε· πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε;
34 Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.
35 A rob ne ostaje u kući vavek, sin ostaje vavek.
35 A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever.
36 Ako vas, dakle, Sin izbavi, zaista ćete biti izbavljeni.
36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.
38 I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father.”
39 Odgovoriše i rekoše Mu: Otac je naš Avraam. Isus im reče: Kad biste vi bili deca Avraamova, činili biste dela Avraamova.
39 They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this.
41 Vi činite dela oca svog. Tada Mu rekoše: Mi nismo rođeni od kurvarstva: jednog Oca imamo, Boga.
41 You do the works of your father.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God.”
42 A Isus im reče: Kad bi Bog bio vaš Otac, ljubili biste mene; jer ja od Boga iziđoh i dođoh; jer ne dođoh sam od sebe, nego me On posla.
42 Therefore Jesus said to them, “If God were your father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven’t come of myself, but he sent me.
43 Zašto ne razumete govor moj? Jer ne možete reči moje da slušate.
43 Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you can’t hear my word.
44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.
45 A meni ne verujete, jer ja istinu govorim.
45 But because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me.
46 Koji me od vas kori za greh?
46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?
46 τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας; εἰ δὲ ἀλήθειαν λέγω, διατί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι;
47 He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don’t hear, because you are not of God.”
48 Then the Jews answered him, “Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”
48 ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ· οὐ καλῶς λέγομεν ἡμεῖς ὅτι Σαμαρείτης εἶ σὺ καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις;
49 Isus odgovori: U meni đavola nema, nego poštujem Oca svog; a vi mene sramotite.
49 Jesus answered, “I don’t have a demon, but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50 But I don’t seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges.
51 Zaista, zaista vam kažem: ko održi reč moju neće videti smrt doveka.
51 Most certainly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death.”
52 Tada Mu rekoše Jevreji: Sad videsmo da je đavo u tebi: Avraam umre i proroci, a ti govoriš: Ko održi reč moju neće okusiti smrt doveka.
52 Then the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.’
52 εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· νῦν ἐγνώκαμεν ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἔχεις. Ἀβραὰμ ἀπέθανε καὶ οἱ προφῆται, καὶ σὺ λέγεις, ἐάν τις τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσῃ, οὐ μὴ γεύσηται θανάτου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα;
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”
53 μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ, ὅστις ἀπέθανε; καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἀπέθανον· τίνα σεαυτὸν σὺ ποιεῖς;
54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God.
55 I ne poznajete Ga, a ja Ga znam; i ako kažem da Ga ne znam biću laža kao vi. Nego Ga znam, i reč Njegovu držim.
55 You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, ‘I don’t know him,’ I would be like you, a liar. But I know him and keep his word.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it and was glad.”
57 Tada Mu rekoše Jevreji: Još ti nema pedeset godina, i Avraama li si video?
57 The Jews therefore said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?”
57 εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς αὐτόν· πεντήκοντα ἔτη οὔπω ἔχεις καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρακας;
58 A Isus im reče: Zaista, zaista vam kažem: Ja sam pre nego se Avraam rodio.
58 Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.”
59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.

Why does my Bible say something different?

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 8:31 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXXIV)

Ye know well, Beloved, that we all have One Master, and are fellow disciples under Him. Nor are we your masters, because we speak to you from this higher spot; but He is the Master of all, who dwelleth in us all.

  2. Commentary 8:12 Augustine of Hippo, Tractates on the Gospel of John (Chapter VIII — 12)

What we have just heard and attentively received, as the holy Gospel was being read, I doubt not that all of us have also endeavored to understand, and that each of us according to his measure apprehended what he could of so great a matter as that which has been read; and while the bread of the word is laid …

  3. Commentary 8:20 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of John (Homily LIII)

Oh the folly of the Jews! seeking Him as they did before the Passover, and then having found Him in the midst of them, and having often attempted to take Him by their own or by others' hands without being able; they were not even so awed by His power, but set themselves to their wickedness, and desisted not.

  4. Quotes verse 8:56 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book II, Chapter XXI)

For when the Lord said to them, "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day; and he saw it, and was glad," they answered Him, "Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast Thou seen Abraham?" Now, such language is fittingly applied to one who has already passed the age of forty, without having as yet reached his fiftieth …

  5. Quotes verse 8:25 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book XI, Chapters IV–IX)

The same is Thy Word, which is also "the Beginning," because also It speaketh unto us. Thus, in the gospel He speaketh through the flesh; and this sounded outwardly in the ears of men, that it might be believed and sought inwardly, and that it might be found in the eternal Truth, where the good and only Master teacheth all …
