1 Solomunova pesma nad pesmama.
1 The Song of songs, which is Solomon’s.
2 Da me hoće poljubiti poljupcem usta svojih! Jer je tvoja ljubav bolja od vina.
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth; for your love is better than wine.
3 Your oils have a pleasing fragrance. Your name is oil poured out, therefore the virgins love you.
4 Vuci me, za tobom ćemo trčati; uvede me car u ložnicu svoju; radovaćemo se i veselićemo se tobom, spominjaćemo ljubav tvoju više nego vino; pravi ljube te.
4 Take me away with you. Let’s hurry. The king has brought me into his rooms. Friends We will be glad and rejoice in you. We will praise your love more than wine! Beloved They are right to love you.
5 I am dark, but lovely, you daughters of Jerusalem, like Kedar’s tents, like Solomon’s curtains.
6 Ne gledajte me što sam crna, jer me je sunce opalilo; sinovi matere moje rasrdivši se na me postaviše me da čuvam vinograde, i ne čuvah svoj vinograd, koji ja imam.
6 Don’t stare at me because I am dark, because the sun has scorched me. My mother’s sons were angry with me. They made me keeper of the vineyards. I haven’t kept my own vineyard.
7 Kaži mi ti, kog ljubi duša moja, gde paseš, gde planduješ? Jer zašto bih lutala među stadima drugova tvojih?
7 Tell me, you whom my soul loves, where you graze your flock, where you rest them at noon; for why should I be as one who is veiled beside the flocks of your companions?
8 If you don’t know, most beautiful among women, follow the tracks of the sheep. Graze your young goats beside the shepherds’ tents.
9 Ti si mi, draga moja, kao konji u kolima Faraonovim.
9 I have compared you, my love, to a steed in Pharaoh’s chariots.
10 Obrazi su tvoji okićeni grivnama, i grlo tvoje nizovima.
10 Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings, your neck with strings of jewels.
11 Načinićemo ti zlatne grivne sa šarama srebrnim.
11 We will make you earrings of gold, with studs of silver.
12 While the king sat at his table, my perfume spread its fragrance.
13 My beloved is to me a sachet of myrrh, that lies between my breasts.
14 My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi.
15 Lepa ti si, draga moja, lepa ti si! Oči su ti kao u golubice.
15 Behold, you are beautiful, my love. Behold, you are beautiful. Your eyes are like doves.
16 Lep ti si, dragi moj, i ljubak! I postelja naša zeleni se.
16 Behold, you are beautiful, my beloved, yes, pleasant; and our couch is verdant.
17 Grede su nam u kućama kedrove, daske su nam jelove.
17 The beams of our house are cedars. Our rafters are firs.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Quotes verse 1:5 Augustine of Hippo, On Christian Doctrine (Book III, Chapters 31–34)

An example of this is that passage in the Song of Solomon, "I am black, but comely, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon." For it is not said, I was black as the tents of Kedar, but am now comely as the curtains of Solomon.

  2. Quotes verse 1:4 Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lectures (Lecture III)

For now meanwhile thou standest outside the door: but God grant that you all may say, The King hath brought me into His chamber.

  3. Quotes verse 1:8 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon XLV)

So then this Bridegroom, "fair in beauty above the children of men," became deformed that He might make His Spouse fair to whom it is said, "O thou beauteous among women," of whom it is said, "Who is this that cometh up, whitened" with the brightness of light, not the colouring of falsehood!

  4. Quotes verse 1:7 Augustine of Hippo, Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament (Sermon LXXXVIII)

… with you, all Beauteous as He was, prayed for you; "Father," saith He, "forgive them, for they know not what they do." For if He were without comeliness, how is it that she loveth Him, who saith, "Tell me, O Thou whom my soul loveth"? How is it that she loveth Him?
