1 Brethren I wolde not that ye shuld be ignoraunt of this how that oure fathers were all vnder a cloude and all passed thorow the see
1 PORQUE no quiero, hermanos, que ignoréis que nuestros padres todos estuvieron bajo la nube, y todos pasaron la mar;
1 Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 and were all baptised vnder Moses in the cloude and in the see:
2 Y todos en Moisés fueron bautizados en la nube y en la mar;
2 and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 and dyd all eate of one spirituall meate
3 Y todos comieron la misma vianda espiritual;
3 and all ate the same spiritual food;
4 and did all drincke of one maner of spirituall drincke. And they dranke of that spretuall rocke that folowed them which rocke was Christ.
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.
5 But in many of them had god no delite. For they were overthrowen in the wildernes.
5 However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 These are ensamples to vs that we shuld not lust after evyll thinges as they lusted.
6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.
7 Nether be ye worshippers of Images as were some of them accordynge as it is written: The people sate doune to eate and drynke and rose vp agayne to playe.
7 Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”
8 Nether let vs comit fornicacion as some of them committed fornicacion and were destroyed in one daye .xxiii. thousande.
8 Let’s not commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell.
9 Nether let vs tempte Christ as some of them tempted and were destroyed of serpentes.
9 Let’s not test Christ, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.
10 Nether murmure ye as some of them murmured and were destroyed of the destroyer.
10 Don’t grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.
11 All these thinges happened vnto them for ensamples and were written to put vs in remembraunce whom the endes of the worlde are come apon.
11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.
12 Wherfore let hym that thynketh he stodeth take hede least he fall.
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall.
13 There hath none other temptacion taken you but soche as foloweth the nature of man. But God is faythfull which shall not suffer you to be tempted above youre strenght: but shall in the myddes of the temptacion make awaye to escape out.
13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
14 Wherfore my deare beloued fle from worshippynge of ydols.
14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
15 I speake as vnto them which have discrecion Iudge ye what I saye.
15 I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say.
16 Ys not the cuppe of blessinge which we blesse partakynge of the bloude of Christ? ys not the breed which we breake partetakynge of the body of Christ?
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ?
17 because that we (though we be many) yet are one breed and one bodye in as moch as we all are partetakers of one breed.
17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread.
18 Beholde Israhell which walketh carnally. Are not they which eate of the sacrifyse partetakers of the aultre?
18 Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
19 What saye I then? that the ymage is eny thinge? or that it which is offered to ymages is eny thinge?
19 What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20 Nay but I saye that those thinges which the gentyle offer they offer to devyls and not to god. And I wolde not that ye shuld have fellishippe with the devils.
20 But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons.
21 Ye cannot drincke of the cup of the lorde and of that cup of the deuyls. Ye cannot be partetakers of the lordes table and of the table of deuelles.
21 You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.
22 Ether shall we provoke the lorde? Or are we stronger then he?
22 ¿O provocaremos á celo al Señor? ¿Somos más fuertes que él?
22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 All thynges are laufull vnto me but all thynges are not expedient. All thynges are lawfull to me but all thinges edifye not.
23 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are profitable. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things build up.
24 Let no man seke his awne proffet: but let every man seke anothers welthe.
24 Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good.
25 What soever is solde in the market that eate and axe no questions for conscience sake.
25 De todo lo que se vende en la carnicería, comed, sin preguntar nada por causa de la conciencia;
25 Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience,
26 For the erth is the lordis and all that therein is.
26 for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.”
27 Yf eny of them which beleve not bid you to a feest and yf ye be disposed to goo what soever is seet before you: eate axinge no question for conscience sake.
27 But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience.
28 But and yf eny man saye vnto you: this is dedicate vnto ydols eate not of it for his sake that shewed it and for hurtynge of conscience. The erth is the lordes and all that there in is.
28 But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, with all its fullness.”
29 Conscience I saye not thyne: but the conscience of that other. For why shuld my liberte be iudged of another manes conscience:
29 La conciencia, digo, no tuya, sino del otro. Pues ¿por qué ha de ser juzgada mi libertad por otra conciencia?
29 Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience?
30 For yf I take my parte with thakes: why am I evell spoken of for that thynge wherfore I geve thankes.
30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for something I give thanks for?
31 Whether therfore ye eate or dryncke or what soever ye do do all to the prayse of God.
31 Whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
32 Se that ye geve occasion of evell nether to the Iewes nor yet to the gentyls nether to the congregacion of god:
32 Sed sin ofensa á Judíos, y á Gentiles, y á la iglesia de Dios:
32 Give no occasion for stumbling, whether to Jews, to Greeks, or to the assembly of God;
33 euen as I please all men in all thinges not sekynge myne awne proffet but the proffet of many that they myght be saved.
33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 10:13 John Chrysostom, Homilies on First Corinthians (Homily XXIV)

    Thus, because he terrified them greatly, relating the ancient examples, and threw them into an agony, saying, "Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall; "though they had borne many temptations, and had exercised themselves many times therein; for "I was with you," saith he, "in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling:" (1 Cor. ii.

  2. Quotes verse 10:26 Clement of Rome, First Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapters LIII–LVIII)

    For "the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof." These things they who live a godly life, that is never to be repented of, both have done and always will do.

  3. Quotes verse 10:16 Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies (Book III, Chapter XVII)

    … and revived, that He might rule over the living and the dead." And again, writing to the Corinthians, he declares, "But we preach Christ Jesus crucified;" and adds, "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?"

  4. Quotes verse 10:13 Augustine of Hippo, Confessions (Book X, Chapters V–VIII)

    But there is hope, because Thou art faithful, who wilt not suffer us to be tempted above that we are able, but wilt with the temptation also make a way to escape, that we may be able to bear it. I would therefore confess what I know concerning myself; I will confess also what I know not concerning myself.

  5. Quotes verse 10:11 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily II)

    Hear ye not Paul saying, "that all these things are written for our admonition"? And thou, if thou hadst to take up a Gospel, wouldest not choose to do so with hands unwashed; but the things that are laid up within it, dost thou not think to be highly necessary?
