PT1904 Patriarchal Text 1904 (accented, eBible edition)
1 Ye beloved beleve not every sprete: but prove the spretes whether they are of God or no: for many falce Prophetes are gone out into the worlde.
1 Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 Herby shall ye knowe the sprete of God. Every sprete that confesseth that Iesus Christ is come in the flesshe is of God.
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,
3 And every sprete which confesseth not that Iesus Christ is come in the flesshe is not of God. And this is that sprete of Antichrist of whom ye have hearde howe that he shuld come: and even now alredy is he in the worlde.
3 and every spirit who doesn’t confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God; and this is the spirit of the Antichrist, of whom you have heard that it comes. Now it is in the world already.
4 Lytell chyldren ye are of God and have overcome them: for greater is he that is in you then he that is in the worlde.
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.
5 They are of the worlde and therfore speake they of the worlde and the worlde heareth them.
5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them.
6 We are of God. He that knoweth God heareth vs: he that is not of God heareth vs not. Herby knowe we the sprete of veritie and the sprete of erroure.
6 We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn’t listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 Beloved let vs love one another: for love cometh of God. And every one that loveth is borne of God and knoweth God.
7 Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God: for God is love.
8 He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.
9 In this appered the love of god to vs ward because that god sent his only begotten sonne into the worlde that we myght live thorow him.
9 By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his only born Son into the world that we might live through him.
10 Herin is love not that we loved god but that he loved vs and sent his sonne to make agrement for oure sinnes.
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
11 Beloved yf god so loved vs we ought also to love one another.
11 Beloved, if God loved us in this way, we also ought to love one another.
12 No man hath sene god at enytyme. Yf we love one another god dwelleth in vs and his love is parfect in vs.
12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.
13 Herby know we that we dwell in him and he in vs: because he hath geven vs of his sprete.
13 By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have sene and do testifie that the father sent the sonne which is the saveour of the worlde.
14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world.
15 Whosoever confesseth that Iesus is the sonne of god in him dwelleth god and he in god.
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him, and he in God.
16 And we have knowen and beleved the love that god hath to vs. God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in god and god in him.
16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
17 Herin is the love perfect in vs that we shuld have trust in the daye of iudgement: For as he is even so are we in this worlde.
17 In this, love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so we are in this world.
18 Ther is no feare in love but parfect love casteth out all feare for feare hath paynfulnes. He that feareth is not parfect in love.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him for he loved vs fyrst.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 Yf a man saye I love god and yet hate his brother he is a lyar. For how can he that loveth not his brother whom he hath sene love god whom he hath not sene?
20 If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
20 ἐάν τις εἴπῃ ὅτι ἀγαπῶ τὸν Θεόν, καὶ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ μισῇ, ψεύστης ἐστίν· ὁ γὰρ μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὃν ἑώρακε, τὸν Θεὸν ὃν οὐχ ἑώρακε πῶς δύναται ἀγαπᾶν;
21 And this commaundement have we of him: that he which loveth God shuld love his brother also.
21 This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations).

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary 4:4 Augustine of Hippo, Homilies on the First Epistle of John (Homily VII)

So is this world to all the faithful seeking their own country, as was the desert to the people Israel. They wandered indeed as yet, and were seeking their own country: but with God for their guide they could not wander astray. Their way was God's bidding.

  2. Quotes verse 4:3 Polycarp of Smyrna, Epistle to the Philippians (The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians)

"For whosoever does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, is antichrist;" and whosoever does not confess the testimony of the cross, is of the devil; and whosoever perverts the oracles of the Lord to his own lusts, and says that there is neither a resurrection nor a judgment, he is the first-born of Satan.

For that fear of which the Apostle John says, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love," --that fear is not of the same kind as the Apostle Paul felt lest the Corinthians should be seduced by the subtlety of the serpent; for …

They fear God, indeed, but it is with that servile fear "which is not in love; for perfect love casteth out fear." Therefore to them that hope in Him He perfecteth His sweetness, inspiring them with His own love, so that with a holy fear, which love does not cast out, but which endureth for ever, they may, when they …
