Notes on this text (2)

1 Ipsi David. [Confitebor tibi, Domine, in toto corde meo, quoniam audisti verba oris mei. In conspectu angelorum psallam tibi; 2 adorabo ad templum sanctum tuum, et confitebor nomini tuo: super misericordia tua et veritate tua; quoniam magnificasti super omne, nomen sanctum tuum. 3 In quacumque die invocavero te, exaudi me; multiplicabis in anima mea virtutem. 4 Confiteantur tibi, Domine, omnes reges terræ, quia audierunt omnia verba oris tui. 5 Et cantent in viis Domini, quoniam magna est gloria Domini; 6 quoniam excelsus Dominus, et humilia respicit, et alta a longe cognoscit. 7 Si ambulavero in medio tribulationis, vivificabis me; et super iram inimicorum meorum extendisti manum tuam, et salvum me fecit dextera tua. 8 Dominus retribuet pro me. Domine, misericordia tua in sæculum; opera manuum tuarum ne despicias.]

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 138.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXVII)

But to-day we have sung, "By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, when we remembered Sion" (ver. 1).... 2. Observe "the waters of Babylon." "The waters of Babylon" are all things which here are loved, and pass away.
