1 Ipsi David. [Confitebor tibi, Domine, in toto corde meo, quoniam audisti verba oris mei. In conspectu angelorum psallam tibi;
138:1 By David. I will give you thanks with my whole heart. Before the gods, I will sing praises to you.
138:2 I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your Name for your loving kindness and for your truth; for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all.
3 In quacumque die invocavero te, exaudi me; multiplicabis in anima mea virtutem.
138:3 In the day that I called, you answered me. You encouraged me with strength in my soul.
4 Confiteantur tibi, Domine, omnes reges terræ, quia audierunt omnia verba oris tui.
138:4 All the kings of the earth will give you thanks, Yahweh, for they have heard the words of your mouth.
5 Et cantent in viis Domini, quoniam magna est gloria Domini;
138:5 Yes, they will sing of the ways of Yahweh, for Yahweh’s glory is great!
6 quoniam excelsus Dominus, et humilia respicit, et alta a longe cognoscit.
138:6 For though Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but he knows the proud from afar.
7 Si ambulavero in medio tribulationis, vivificabis me; et super iram inimicorum meorum extendisti manum tuam, et salvum me fecit dextera tua.
138:7 Though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me. You will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies. Your right hand will save me.
8 Dominus retribuet pro me. Domine, misericordia tua in sæculum; opera manuum tuarum ne despicias.]
138:8 Yahweh will fulfill that which concerns me. Your loving kindness, Yahweh, endures forever. Don’t forsake the works of your own hands.

What the Fathers said

Passages from the Church Fathers that expound or quote this chapter, verbatim from the public-domain Schaff edition (19th-century English translations). Verse numbers below follow the Hebrew/English numbering: 138.

How these were chosen

“Commentary” is the opening of a homily or exposition on this chapter (John Chrysostom’s homilies, Augustine’s tractates, sermons and expositions of the Psalms). “Quotes” are sentences where the edition’s own footnotes identify a quotation of a verse here, kept only when the wording matches the verse. Only works whose authorship is not in doubt are used. Psalms follow the Hebrew/English numbering (Augustine numbers them as the Septuagint does: his Psalm 50 is Psalm 51 here).

  1. Commentary Augustine of Hippo, Expositions on the Psalms (Psalm CXXXVII)

    But to-day we have sung, "By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, when we remembered Sion" (ver. 1).... 2. Observe "the waters of Babylon." "The waters of Babylon" are all things which here are loved, and pass away.
