1 And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death.
1 Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
2 And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
2 Y le llevaron atado, y le entregaron á Poncio Pilato presidente.
2 They bound him, led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients,
3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus was condemned, felt remorse, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? look thou to it.
4 Diciendo: Yo he pecado entregando la sangre inocente.
4 saying, “I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.”
5 And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himself with an halter.
5 He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary and departed. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6 But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood.
6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It’s not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
7 And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter’s field, to be a burying place for strangers.
7 They took counsel, and bought the potter’s field with them to bury strangers in.
8 For this cause the field was called Haceldama, that is, The field of blood, even to this day.
8 Therefore that field has been called “The Field of Blood” to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel.
9 Entonces se cumplió lo que fué dicho por el profeta Jeremías, que dijo: Y tomaron las treinta [piezas] de plata, precio del apreciado, que fué apreciado por los hijos de Israel;
9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him upon whom a price had been set, whom some of the children of Israel priced,
10 And they gave them unto the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed to me.
10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”
11 And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it.
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “So you say.”
12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee?
13 Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how many things they testify against you?”
14 And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor wondered exceedingly.
14 He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
15 Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would.
15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner whom they desired.
16 And he had then a notorious prisoner, that was called Barabbas.
16 They had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.
17 They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?
17 When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
18 For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up.
19 And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away.
20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
21 And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said, Barabbas.
21 But the governor answered them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”
22 Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified.
22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do to Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let him be crucified!”
23 The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified.
23 But the governor said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out exceedingly, saying, “Let him be crucified!”
24 And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it.
24 So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it.”
25 And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and our children.
25 All the people answered, “May his blood be on us and on our children!”
26 Then he released to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified.
26 Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band;
27 Entonces los soldados del presidente llevaron á Jesús al pretorio, y juntaron á él toda la cuadrilla;
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him.
28 And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.
28 Y desnudándole, le echaron encima un manto de grana;
28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
29 And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews.
29 They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
30 And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head.
30 They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.
31 And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him.
31 When they had mocked him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they forced to take up his cross.
32 As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross.
33 And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.
33 When they came to a place called “Golgotha”, that is to say, “The place of a skull,”
34 And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink.
34 they gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.
35 And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
35 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots,
36 And they sat and watched him.
36 Y sentados le guardaban allí.
36 and they sat and watched him there.
37 And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
37 Y pusieron sobre su cabeza su causa escrita: ESTE ES JESUS EL REY DE LOS JUDIOS.
37 They set up over his head the accusation against him written, “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
38 Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left.
38 Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.
39 And they that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads,
39 Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads
40 And saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self: if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
40 and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
41 In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said:
41 Likewise the chief priests also mocking with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
42 “He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
43 He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God.
43 He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
44 And the selfsame thing the thieves also, that were crucified with him, reproached him with.
44 The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
47 And some that stood there and heard, said: This man calleth Elias.
47 Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
48 And immediately one of them running took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar; and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
49 And the others said: Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him.
49 The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
50 Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent.
51 Y he aquí, el velo del templo se rompió en dos, de alto á bajo: y la tierra tembló, y las piedras se hendieron;
51 Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
52 And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose,
52 Y abriéronse los sepulcros, y muchos cuerpos de santos que habían dormido, se levantaron;
52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
53 And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: Indeed this was the Son of God.
54 Now the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were done, were terrified, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
55 And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
55 Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him.
56 Among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 And when it was evening, there came a certain rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus.
57 When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathaea named Joseph, who himself was also Jesus’ disciple, came.
58 He went to Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered.
58 This man went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
59 And Joseph taking the body, wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth.
59 Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
60 And laid it in his own new monument, which he had hewed out in a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument, and went his way.
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.
61 And there was there Mary Magdalen, and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre.
61 Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 And the next day, which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,
62 Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,
63 Saying: Sir, we have remembered, that that seducer said, while he was yet alive: After three days I will rise again.
63 saying, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again.’
64 Command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day: lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away, and say to the people: He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.
64 Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate saith to them: You have a guard; go, guard it as you know.
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
66 And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting guards.
66 So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.

  3. Cita 27:63 John Chrysostom, Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily XLIII)

For as to their being aware of it, they say to Pilate, "That deceiver said," these are their words, "while He was yet alive, After three days I will rise again;" and yet we know His disciples were ignorant of this; even as they had been beforehand more void of understanding than these: wherefore also these became self-condemned.

  5. Cita 27:51 Gregory of Nazianzus, Theological Orations (The Third Theological Oration)

He lays down His life, but He has power to take it again; and the veil is rent, for the mysterious doors of Heaven are opened; the rocks are cleft, the dead arise. He dies, but He gives life, and by His death destroys death.
