1 The word that came from the Lord to Jeremiah, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go out of Ramah, when he had taken him in manacles in the midst of the captivity of Judah, [even] those who were carried to Babylon.
1 Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza.
2 And the chief captain of the guard took him, and said to him, The Lord thy God has pronounced all these evils upon this place:
2 Así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que suben aguas del aquilón, y tornaránse en torrente, é inundarán la tierra y su plenitud, ciudades y moradores de ellas; y los hombres clamarán, y aullará todo morador de la tierra.
2 Yahweh says: “Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and will become an overflowing stream, and will overflow the land and all that is therein, the city and those who dwell therein. The men will cry, and all the inhabitants of the land will wail.
3 and the Lord has done it; because ye sinned against him, and hearkened not to his voice.
3 Por el sonido de las uñas de sus fuertes, por el alboroto de sus carros, por el estruendo de sus ruedas, los padres no miraron á los hijos por la flaqueza de las manos;
3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers don’t look back for their children because their hands are so feeble,
4 Behold, I have loosed thee from the manacles that were upon thy hands. If it seem good to thee to go with me to Babylon, then will I set mine eyes upon thee.
4 because of the day that comes to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains; for Yahweh will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.
5 But if not, depart; return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed governor in the land of Judah, and dwell with him in the midst of the people in the land of Judah: to whatsoever places it seems good in thine eyes to go, do thou even go. And the captain of the guard made him presents, and let him go.
5 Baldness has come on Gaza; Ashkelon is brought to nothing. You remnant of their valley, how long will you cut yourself?
6 And he came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, and dwelt in the midst of his people that was left in the land.
6 “‘You sword of Yahweh, how long will it be before you are quiet? Put yourself back into your scabbard; rest, and be still.’
7 And all the leaders of the host that was in the country, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah [governor] in the land, and they committed to him the men and their wives, whom [Nebuchadnezzar had] not removed to Babylon.
7 “How can you be quiet, since Yahweh has given you a command? Against Ashkelon, and against the seashore, there he has appointed it.”
8 And there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

11 And all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and those [that were] in Edom, and those [that were] in all [the rest of] the country, heard that the king of Babylon [had] granted a remnant to Judah, and that he had appointed over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.
